SEQUIM — Sequim remained in a third-place tie with Port Angeles after taking down second-place North Kitsap 1-0 in an Olympic League 2A Division boys soccer game.

The Wolves’ victory was their third straight and seventh in their last eight games.

The top four Olympic League 2A teams advance to the playoffs, but the fourth-place squad must play an extra loser-out game to reach the district tournament.

“That’s a good win for us,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said of Thursday’s match.

“We were hoping to get that one and keep the roll going, and we played an excellent match.

“North K’s coach thought they played one of their better games of the season, so to beat them when they are playing strongly is a big positive for us.”

The Wolves broke through for the lone goal of the game in the 26th minute.

Josiah Urquia put the ball through to Liam Harris down the left side of the field to start the play.

Harris dribbled to the end line, cut in toward the goal and fired a shot from close range.

The goalkeeper made the save, but the ball came right back to Harris on the rebound and he managed to spin it past the keeper on the second try.

“Not a beautiful goal, but it was timely and a good effort, from when Liam first received the pass to the goal,” Brasher said.

Sequim had a chance to go up 2-0 in the second half, but Urquia’s shot was wide of the mark on a breakaway.

Brasher praised the efforts of goalie Austin Wagner.

“Austin made some big saves, including one on their striker Reese Newman about five minutes after Liam’s goal,” Brasher said.

Wagner finished with six saves, and was picked by Brasher as Sequim’s man of the match.

“Austin and our back three defenders, Christian Benson, J.T. McElhose and Evan James, and Matthew Craig and Blake Eriks, shut them down,” Brasher said.

The Wolves (6-4-0, 9-5-0) host Bremerton (5-5-0, 6-7-1) on Tuesday.

“That could be a really interesting game in terms of the playoff race,” Brasher said.

The Knights are a game back of Sequim and lost to the Wolves 5-1 last month.

Port Angeles 8, Olympic 0

PORT ANGELES — Mired in an offensive slump for much of April, the Roughriders found the back of the net repeatedly in a blowout win over the Trojans.

“After a rough couple weeks of own goals and outplaying teams but not getting results, [we] were in need of a win,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.

“[We] got the job done with a well-rounded team performance.”

Jesse Salgado led the Riders with a second-half hat trick, including a long-range bullet to the upper-right corner of the goal.

“It was one of the best goals of the year,” Saari said.

Port Angeles scored three times in the first half.

Andrew St. George put the Riders on the board in the 20th minute, scoring off of an assist from Grayson Peet.

Spencer Beverford-Stewart added an unassisted goal three minutes later.

Tim Meyer scored on an assist from Jackson May four minutes before halftime.

Kenny Soule added the Riders’ fourth goal four minutes after halftime.

Salgado’s scoring binge started in the 52nd minute when he knocked home a goal on an assist from Andrew Methner.

He struck again in the 66th minute, and scored once more in the 68th minute on an assist by Josef Sollmann.

Sollmann found Ben Schneider with another pass to round out the scoring in the 73rd minute.

Saari selected Salgado as the offensive player of the match, while Hollund Bailey and Grayson Peet were praised for their work in defense and in transition, respectively.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keenan Leslie recorded the shutout.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Port Angeles (6-4-0, 8-5-1), and kept the Riders tied for third in Olympic League 2A with Sequim (6-4-0, 9-5-0).

The top four teams advance to the playoffs.

Port Angeles will close out the regular season at home on senior night against North Mason (0-9-0, 2-11-0) on Thursday.

BREMERTON — Beating the Knights moved the Roughriders into a tie for first place in Olympic League 2A because North Kitsap fell to Olympic 9-4.

Port Angeles (8-2, 14-3) finishes the regular season with complete control of its destiny. The Riders play at third-place Olympic (8-3, 12-4) on Monday, and then host North Kitsap (8-2, 11-4) on Tuesday.

Port Angeles wins the league crown with wins in both games. The Riders take second with a split and third if they drop both games.

Janson Pederson had another solid outing on the mound for Port Angeles, pitching six inning and striking out six while holding Bremerton to two hits and two runs.

“He was solid through six innings,” Riders coach Vic Reykdal said.

“The nice thing is we finally gave him some early run support so he wasn’t feeling all the pressure.”

Port Angeles scored one run in the first, another in the second and two in the third to give Pederson a 4-1 lead after three innings.

The Riders then exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to take a comfortable 10-1 lead.

Tanner Gochnour doubled and tripled for Port Angeles, scoring two runs and driving in another.

“He also hooked a homer foul that I thought was in. It was way over the foul pole,” Reykdal said. “That was unfortunate.”

Eathen Boyer drove in three runs and had two hits and Jace Bohman added a pair of hits and scored twice for the Riders.

Ryan Rodocker relieved Pederson in the seventh inning and stuck out three while giving up a hit.

BREMERTON — Starting pitcher Hope Wegener was close to perfection as the Roughriders powered past the Knights.

“Hope Wegener pitched a no-hitter and was two outs away from a perfect game when we made an error,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said of Friday’s game.

The Riders pounded out 16 hits in the win.

Brennan Gray brought home two runs on a triple and a double for Port Angeles, while Ashley Howell added three hits, including a double, and also scored.

Natalie Steinman went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs.

FORKS — The Spartans struggled in a three-inning loss to the Eagles.

“A week of Jekyll and Hyde,” Forks coach Scott Bennett said.

“After playing well on Tuesday against Elma, [we] came out flat and stayed that way.”

The Spartans lost 8-7 on a walk-off hit to the Eagles Tuesday.

Elma scored 17 runs in the first two innings of Thursday’s game, including a home run by Emily Anglin.

Forks committed six errors in the loss.

COVINGTON — Bailey Kieffer pitched a three-hit shutout as the Rangers won their closest SeaTac League contest in several seasons.

“Credit Rainier Christian and their pitcher Hannah Christianson,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said.

“She has improved and so has their team.”

The Rangers got on the board in the third inning when Katie Bailey singled to center field on an 0-2 count, bringing in two runs.

“What an at-bat,” Thompson said.

“Katie fouled off seven 0-2 pitches before lining the ball into center field.

“That was huge for us because our team was really struggling at the plate at that point in the game.”

Erin Macedo went 4 for 4 with two RBIs at the plate to lead Quilcene.

Her two-run single in the sixth inning gave the Rangers a five-run cushion.

Megan Weller scored three runs and tripled.

Quilcene (5-0, 10-2) hosts Darrington on Tuesday in a nonleague game.
