GIG HARBOR — The Port Angeles swim and dive team won six events and qualified for the Class 2A state meet in two more events in a nonleague meet against Class 3A Peninsula High School.
The Roughriders outscored the Seahawks 115 to 71.
Nadia Cole won two events — the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle — and qualified for state in both events with a time of 2 minutes, 5.01 seconds in the 200 and 5:37.37 in the 500 freestyle. Emma Murray also won two events, the 200 individual medley (2:26.09) and the 100 butterfly (1:06.86).
Also winning their events were:
• 200 Medley Relay — Kenzie Johnson, Cole, Felicia Che and Kiara Schmitt, 2:00.14
• 200 Free Relay — Ashlee Seelye, Murray, Erin Edwards and Che, 1:51.59
• Johnson, 100 backstroke, 1:06.24
• Cassii Middlestead, 1-meter diving, 176.60 points
The Roughriders also totaled four new individual district times against Peninsula. Edwards qualified in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.51, and in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.38. She finished third in both events.
Schmitt also qualified in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.38, good for fifth, and in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:13.76, good for fourth.
Port Angeles (2-0, 3-0) next competes in an away Olympic League meet against North Kitsap at 3:30 p.m. today.
Girls Soccer Port Angeles 7, Bremerton 0
BREMERTON — The Roughriders pushed their league record to 2-0 with their second straight shutout in a 7-0 win over Bremerton.
Port Angeles used its superior speed throughout the game to create problems for the Knights’ defense, according to coach Scott Moseley.
“We have so many players with pace that we just keep coming at teams from all sides of the field,” Moseley said.
Delaney Wenzl scored a goal in the eighth minute after she pushed up from her defensive position and hit a strong shot inside the near post.
Freshman Emilia Long scored the next two goals to boost her scoring total to six goals in her first five varsity games.
“As [Long] was dribbling for her 2nd goal, a Bremerton defender barreled into her, but instead of knocking Millie down, the Bremerton player bounced to the ground while [Long] ran past and took the shot. It was a great example of her toughness on the field,” said Moseley.
Sierra Robinson also scored two goals in the 58th and 61st minutes, both on scrambles in front of the goal.
“[Robinson] was doing such a great job of sending balls in and beating her defenders that it was ironic that both of her goals came from scrambles in front of the goal, “ Moseley commented.
Krysten McGuffey tallied her second goal of the season in the 64th minute. She took a pass from Long at the corner of the penalty box and blasted a knuckleball over the keeper’s head. The scoring finished with Wenzl assisting Emily Boyd in the 75th minute, who tallied her first goal of the season.
“It was truly a dominating performance—we had 26 shots, they had 2; we had 19 shots on goal, they had 1. We played well and it showed.” The Riders’ defense and goalie Bonnie Sires recorded their third shutout of the season.
Port Angeles (2-0, 3-2) plays defending Olympic League 2A champs Olympic at Civic Field at 6:45 p.m. today.
Sequim 1, North Mason 0
SEQUIM — The Wolves dominated North Mason, coming away with a 1-0 win for their first Olympic League 2A win of the season..
The score could have been much more lopsided, according to coach Derek Vander Velde. Sequim had 12 shots on goal and hit the crossbar several times. Adare McMinn scored the Wolves’ goal on a strike from 22 yards out.
Vander Velde said notable players in the win were freshmen Natalya James, Mary McAleer, sophomore Kristina Mingoy and junior Nathalie Torres.
Sequim (1-1, 3-2) next plays at first-place North Kitsap at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.
