PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Rider golfers bounce back with low rounds vs. Bremerton

East Jefferson boys soccer plays well in tie with Klahowya

BREMERTON — Port Angeles rebounded from a close loss to Bainbridge with an excellent team score on a difficult course, the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

Nate Anderson shot a 2-over-par 38 to earn match medalist honors for the Port Angeles boys.

Cale Wentz and Austin Worthington were right on his heels with rounds of 39 and Sky Gelder’s 43 rounded out the Riders’ scoring.

“I figured with Tuesdays loss our guys would be determined and lock in,” coach Bob Anderson said. “[A] great day on the course and we enjoyed chatting with the whole Bremerton team and coaches.”

Port Angeles (3-1) plays North Kitsap at Port Ludlow Golf Course on Thursday.

Bainbridge 154, Sequim 190

SEQUIM — Cody Dunscomb led the Wolves with a 6-over-par 42 on the front nine at The Cedars at Dungeness on Thursday in a loss to the Spartans.

Adrian Aragon posted a 47, while Lars Wiker added a 49 and Ryan Stites shot 52.

Andrew Grinter shot a 1-under-35 to earn match medalist honors for Bainbridge.

Girls Golf Port Angeles 205, Bremerton 265

BREMERTON — Lauryn Chapman posted her season-low round of 44 to earn match medalist honors in the Riders’ win.

Claire Osterberg was next up for Port Angeles with a 52, Autumn Wilson-Rowland had a 53 and Brenna Furnice posted a 55.

Port Angeles defeated Bremerton today (3-21) 205 to 265. Lauryn Chapman led the way with her best round of the young season a 44.

“It was good to have our team captain Lauryn return,” coach Mike DuPuis said. “She missed a couple of matches, so it was nice to see her back and playing so well. Autumn, who just started playing golf last year, has seen her hard work start to pay off by shooting another career-low round as did the straight hitting Brenna Furnice. All the girls just keep getting better and better and its fun to watch their confidence grow and their hard work paying off.”

Earlier in the week Port Angeles fell 218-229 to Bainbridge at Wing Point Golf & Country Club.

Claire Osterberg once again led PA in scoring with a 52. Mia Neff was right behind her shooting a 54. Brenna Furnice’s 61 was next followed by Malena Marquez and Autumn Wilson-Rowland both with 62’s. Izzy Spencer shot a 70.

Bainbridge 190, Sequim 203

SEQUIM — The Wolves shot their lowest total of the season led by Emily Post’s round of 49.

Taryn Johnson and Raimey Brewer each shot 51 and Ava Johnson added a 52 for the Wolves.

Boys Soccer East Jefferson 1, Klahowya 1

PORT TOWNSEND — Rene Martin scored the equalizer two minutes into the second half and goalkeeper Emilio Lopez made eight saves, including some game savers late for the Rivals in a Nisqually League match Thursday.

“He had three unbelievable saves in the last five minutes of the game,” coach Logan Stegner said. “He saved us, that is for sure.”

Stegner said Simon Barlow created opportunities while playing on the wing and Edu Martinez played well.

“He was super aggressive defensively and made some connecting passes with our midfield,” Stegner said.

East Jefferson (1-3-1, 1-4-1) visits Olympic today in a nonleague game.

North Kitsap 4, Sequim 0

SEQUIM — The Vikings took full advantage of some missing starters defensively for the Wolves.

“They exploited our back line immediately, taking advantage of the fact that we were missing three out of four of our fullbacks,” coach Dave Breckenridge said. “Unfortunately missing key players really reflected in the match. We had some outstanding play from Mason Rapelje who is a freshman and Colton Wagner and Finn Braaten also stood out in a high pressure match.”

The Wolves switched to a 4-3-3 formation in the second half and slowed the Vikings down, Breckenridge said.

Sequim (1-2-0) hosts Bainbridge on Tuesday.
