PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles wrestlers open with two huge dual-meet wins; Roughrider swimmers splash Klahowya

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys wrestling squad is off to a fantastic start, with wins over their two biggest Olympic League 2A Division rivals, North Mason and North Kitsap, to begin the season.

The Riders beat North Kitsap handily 45-25 Thursday night take command of the Olympic League 2A. The Vikings had been ranked No. 7 in the state.

“That’s the two toughest teams in the league and we got by them,” said coach Rob Gale. Earlier in the week, the Riders beat North Mason 40-39, going to the eighth tiebreaker, which is who scores the first points in the final match, to beat the Bulldogs.

“We wrestled great [against North Kitsap]. If we had wrestled that well against North Mason, we would have beaten them by a lot more points,” Gale said.

Winning their matches against the Vikings were Scott Hedin at 120 pounds; Daniel Basden, by pin at 126 pounds; freshman Gavin DeVore at 138 pounds; Zach Gavin at 145 pounds; Jackson Larsen by pin at 152 pounds; Riley Gale by pin at 170 pounds and Trevor Shumway at 182 pounds. The Riders also won by forfeit at 106 and 285 pounds.

Port Angeles (2-0) took a contingent to the Larry Brown Invitational in Fife on Saturday. The Riders next meet will be another league dual at Kingston at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Boys Swimming Port Angeles 109, Klahowya 73

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders placed first in nine of 12 events and outscored the Eagles in eight of 12 events to pick up their first Olympic League dual meet win of the season.

Three Port Angeles swimmers posted new district qualifying times.

Josh Krzysiak won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.39 seconds, Henry Shaw placed third in the 100 butterfly (1:07.74) and Adam Weller was fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:29.22).

Cameron Butler won two events, the 200 IM (2:07.78) and the 500 free (5:09.11).

Port Angeles (1-1) hosts Sequim on Thursday.
