PORT ANGELES — Down 2 games to none, the Port Angeles volleyball team rallied for a 20-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-23, 15-7 victory against the Buccaneers in the team’s Olympic League 2A Division opener.
Kiana Robideau led Port Angeles with 13 kills and five service aces. She also added 12 digs.
Aeverie Politika had six kills for the Riders, and Brennan Gray led the team in digs with 13.
Setter Callie Hall added 26 assists and served 23 of 23 for Port Angeles (1-0, 2-0).
The Riders visit Bremerton (1-0) on Tuesday.
Sequim 3, Coupeville 0
COUPEVILLE — The Wolves accomplished exactly what coach Jennie Webber Heilman wanted going into the match: a three-game sweep of the Coupeville Wolves.
And in time to make a mad dash for an earlier ferry home.
Sequim took down Coupeville 25-17, 25-13, 26-24, though the Wolves trailed in all three sets.
“In the third game we kind of fell apart when they had a tough server serving,” Wolves coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.
“They served nine points in a row and we were down 17-9.”
The comeback was keyed by solid serving from Sydney Balkan and Lillian Oden, according to Heilman.
Balkan was 12 for 12 on serve with three aces, five assists and three kills.
Oden added 10 assists and three aces, including a crucial ace when Sequim trailed 24-21.
Adrienne Haggerty added nine kills, four digs and three blocks for the Wolves, while Taylor Breckenridge served 21 for 24 with six aces, nine digs and two kills.
Ella Christiansen had four kills, Maddie Potts added three kills and three aces and Isabelle Dennis notched seven digs.
Sequim (1-0, 2-0) visits North Mason (0-1, 0-1) on Tuesday.
Boys Tennis Port Angeles 5, Klahowya 2
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys tennis team soared to a 5-2 win against Klahowya.
“The guys played some of the best tennis of the season to defeat the Eagles with, in many cases, pure determination and focus,” Roughriders coach Gil Stockton said.
“Hayden Woods let the second set get away to a tie breaker after leading quite comfortably but, as he said, ‘there was no way I was going to play a third set—it’s too hot’, so he pulled it all together and won the tiebreaker.”
Stockton said the team ball went to the No. 4 doubles team of Daniel Basden and Bo Bradow.
They won the first set, lost the second, were down 0-5 in the third and came back to win the third set in a tie breaker 8-6.
“By the time they were finished, the sun was down and everyone was standing around the court, both teams, cheering each team on with each point,” Stockton said.
“Bo Bradow is a freshman who picked up a racquet for the first time at the beginning of this season and this was his first varsity match. He has a good future ahead as do many of the freshmen who are starting out this season.”
Port Angeles (2-2, 2-2) visits Bremerton (2-2, 2-2) today.
