PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles softball bashes Olympic, Wilson

PORT ANGELES — Starting pitcher Nizhoni Wheeler was dominant in Port Angeles’ 9-0 victory over Olympic in a battle of unbeatn Olympic League 2A softball teams at Dry Creek Elementary School.

Wheeler allowed one hit and one walk while striking out 10 to notch a complete-game win Thursday.

“Nizhoni Wheeler pitched a masterpiece,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said.

“She gave up one hit in the fourth inning. Nizhoni was in command of the game from start to finish.

“She also had some great defense behind her as the team didn’t commit an error and made some outstanding plays in the field.”

Wheeler also went 2 for 3 with a triple, a walk and an RBI.

Sierra Robinson had two hits and reached base three times, stealing two bases and scoring twice for the Riders.

Nikki Price, Brennan Gray and Natalie Steinman all hit doubles for Port Angeles.

“Timely hitting and great base running put enough runs on the board to give Olympic their first loss in league play,” Steinman said.

The win kept Port Angeles (3-0, 9-0) in a tie for first place in the Olympic League 2A Division with Sequim (3-0, 9-1), and pushed Olympic (2-1, 5-2) to third place.

Thursday’s win was the 14th consecutive Olympic League win for Port Angeles. The league win streak dates back to an 8-5 loss to Sequim in a first-place tiebreaker game on May 16, 2014.

North Kitsap 9, Quilcene 5

POULSBO — The Class 1B Rangers couldn’t hold onto a 4-0 lead against the 2A Vikings.

Alexis Gray’s two-run double and Alex Johnsen’s two-run triple in the second inning gave Quilcene the early advantage, but then the bats went silent and errors by the defense began to mount.

Rangers starting pitcher Bailey Kieffer was able to cover for the miscues through the first 4 1/3 innings Friday, but the early errors caused her pitch count to get too high, and the Vikings broke through in the fifth inning with six runs.

“Errors come back to bite you one way or another. In this case, only one unearned run scored as a result, but about 50 more pitches were thrown than were needed,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said.

“This team will bounce back.”

The Rangers (2-0, 5-2) again play up a classification in their next game, which is at 2B La Conner (3-3) on Thursday.

Klahowya 1, Port Angeles 0

PORT ANGELES — An early mistake in midfield was enough to hold down the Roughriders in a nonleague home loss to the Eagles.

Klahowya intercepted a Port Angeles pass in the 11th minute, quickly transitioned and scored the contest’s lone goal on a cross to the middle followed by a one-touch finish.

“Keenan Leslie kept [us] in the game with his solid play in the net for 65 minutes until [being] relieved by backup goalie Jackson May,” Riders coach Chris Saari said.

The Riders were outshot 25-5 in the game.

“Hollund Bailey looked solid in the back for [us] with his speed and tenacious defending. Scott Methner also had a strong defensive game with slide tackles and quality distribution of the ball,” Saari said.

Saari also praised the play of Andrew Borde, a second-half substitute, in central midfield.

“[He] was a presence with his ball-winning and distribution,” Saari said.

Port Angeles (4-1-0, 6-2-1) visits North Kitsap (4-1-0, 4-1-2) on Tuesday.

Sequim 5, Bremerton 1

BREMERTON — A late three-goal flurry by sophomore Josiah Urquia highlighted the Wolves Olympic League 2A Division win against the Knights.

“Josiah Urquia kind of went off for us,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

With the Wolves ahead 2-1 in the 68th minute, Urquia gathered a pass from Liam Harris, broke loose down the right side and scored.

Seven minutes later, Harris and Urquia linked up once more.

“Liam took a quick freekick in our own end, caught them sleeping, and Josiah chased it down and knocked in his second goal,” Brasher said.

A minute later, Urquia received another pass from Harris to complete his hat trick.

Brasher tabbed Urquia as his player of the game for his scoring spree.

“I gave Josiah the man of the match for the hat trick and getting off the schneid a little bit,” Brasher said.

Harris, who notched Sequim’s first goals in the 29th and 54th minutes and assisted on all three Urquia goals, also received praise.

“Liam was a real instigator for us,” Brasher said.

“And Cameron Chase had another solid game for us in midfield. A workmanlike effort. He’s typically a center-forward and we are asking him to play a little deeper at central mid.”

The Wolves trailed 1-0 after yielding a goal in the fourth minute.

“We had to settle down,” Brasher said.

“They were pushing the ball wide and getting lots of nice crosses into the box in the first half.

“So we wanted to close that down quicker, and then offensively, we were playing a little too much down the middle.

“We pushed our offense a little wider and tried to keep the ball on the ground instead of trying to go up and over them.”

The win put Sequim (2-3-0, 5-4-0) in sole control of fourth place in the Olympic League 2A standings, a game ahead of Bremerton (2-4-0, 2-6-0).

Sequim hosts league-leading Kingston (5-0-0, 8-0-1) on Tuesday.
