PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles girls tennis tames Coupeville

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles claimed its first girls tennis victory of the season by edging Coupeville 4-3 at Port Angeles High School.

The Roughriders won two singles and two doubles matches in Thursday’s contest.

Port Angeles’ Audrey Little lost the No. 1 singles showdown to Valen Trujillo 6-3, 6-3, but Little still was picked as the Riders’ player of the match by coach Stephanie Gochnour.

“Audrey played her heart out today and worked hard for every point,” Gochnour said.

“I’m glad she will get another opportunity this season to face this opponent because they were so evenly matched.

“As a spectator, this match was fun to watch, with rallies reaching at least 20 hits or more.

“A great start to Audrey’s singles season.”

The Riders and Wolves are slated to meet again April 12.

Port Angeles’ Maddy Woods defeated Coupeville’s Makenzi La Rue 6-0, 6-1 in Thursday’s No. 2 singles match.

The Riders’ winning doubles tandems were Summer Olson and Aeverie Politika and Jocelyn Reifenstahl and Paulina Crawford.

Port Angeles (1-1, 1-1) stays at home for its next four matches, starting against Klahowya (0-1, 0-1) on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

Klahowya 1, Sequim 0

BREMERTON — The Wolves opened their season with a loss to the Eagles at Silverdale Stadium.

“They’re a pretty strong team, probably one of the favorites this year [in the Olympic League] 1A Division,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said of Klahowya following Thursday’s match.

“It was our first game and their third game. We were a little nervous and excited because it was our first game.”

Klahowya’s goal came in the 34th minute on a cross from the right side.

The Eagles outshot the Wolves 14-5.

Sequim goalkeeper Austin Wagner made eight saves.

Brasher said defenders JT McElhose and Blake Eriks played well in the middle for the Wolves.

Softball

Port Angeles 5, South Kitsap 0

PORT ORCHARD — The Roughriders have opened the season with two victories over schools from higher classifications.

“[We] played a near perfect game against a talented South Kitsap team,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said of Thursday’s win.

“Our pitchers were in command of all their pitches throughout the game. Offensively, we executed all the little things and took advantage of South Kitsap’s mistakes.”

Class 2A Port Angeles tallied nine hits while holding the 4A Wolves to four.

Nizhoni Wheeler started for the Riders and pitched five innings, striking out eight, walking two and allowing two hits.

Hope Wegener gave up two hits and struck out one batter in two innings of relief.

At the plate, Natalie Steinman, Sierra Robinson, Kylee Reid and Lauren Lunt each had two hits. Wheeler had the Riders’ other hit.

Steinman and Robinson scored two runs apiece. Reid doubled and scored.

Port Angeles defeated 3A Central Kitsap 11-4 on Tuesday.

The Riders (2-0) stay on the road and face another larger school when they travel to Tacoma to face Wilson on Monday.

QUILCENE — Rangers 47, the rest of the world 1.

Quilcene achieved its second 20-run performance in two games this season by blanking the Chitwins in five innings Thursday.

The Rangers opened the season with a 26-1 shellacking of North Mason on Tuesday.

Quilcene pounded out 15 hits in the win over Taholah.

Megan Weller had a monster day at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a triple, a home run and five RBI. Erin Macedo also hit a home run, and Katie Bailey went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs.

“Megan really swung the bat well today,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said.

“She has worked on being more patient and it has paid off. Her and Erin hitting back-to-back has worked out real well so far.”

Bailey Kieffer pitched four innings of two-hit ball to notch her second win on the season for the Rangers. Abby Weller pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

“We are pretty dialed in right now, but we have to keep improving everyday,” Thompson said.

“The competition is going to get a lot better real soon.”

Quilcene opens SeaTac League play at home against Muckleshoot Tribal on Tuesday.

TENINO — The Spartans opened their season with a 10-run loss to the Beavers in five innings in Evergreen League action.

Sarah Adams went 2 for 3 for Forks in Thursday’s game, and Julia Lausche had a double and drove in two runs.

“No excuses. Lots of things we did not do and Tenino made the most of it,” Spartans coach Scott Bennett said

“We have a big week ahead of us and we have to do better.”

Forks hosts Tenino on Monday and then Montesano on Tuesday.
