PORT ANGELES — German exchange student Lukas Mobius’ goal gave Port Angeles to its first boys soccer victory over North Kitsap in more than a decade.
The win over the Vikings was the first in the 12-year tenure Chris Saari as head coach of Roughriders.
“I would guess the last time we beat them was when we were a 4A school in 2000,” Saari said.
Mobius was fouled just before halftime and converted the penalty kick that held up as the match’s only goal in the Riders’ 1-0 win Thursday at Civic Field.
“It was an end-to-end game, with both teams creating quality chances throughout,” Saari said.
Sophomore goalkeeper Keenan Leslie recorded his second shutout of the season in Port Angeles’ Olympic League 2A opener.
Leslie received some second-half assistance from center back Hollund Bailey. Bailey headed the ball away from an empty net when Leslie was caught out of the goal box. Bailey earned Saari’s nod for the Riders’ defensive player of the match.
Saari named Mobius and Tim Meyer his offensive players of the match. Wei-Yan Fu and Grayson Peet were lauded for their work in transition.
The Riders (1-0-0, 3-0-1) visit Bremerton (1-0-0, 1-21)
on Tuesday.
The Port Angeles JV fell 2-0 to the Vikings.

FORKS — The Spartans shut out the Beavers to earn their first victory of the season, and the program’s first win since defeating Chimacum to open the 2015 season.
Alex Martinez and Sam Gomez scored goals for Forks in Thursday’s game.
The Spartans also scored on a Tenino own goal.
Forks (1-1-0, 1-1-0) visits Montesano (1-2-0, 1-4-0) on Monday.

BREMERTON — Parker Elias shot a nine-hole score of 49 to earn medalist honors in the Roughriders’ first Olympic League victory of the season.
“This was his best round of the year so far,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said.
Royce Duncan carded a 51, Cameron Fouts shot 55 and Ben Fowler notched a 56.
“Ben Fowler has cut 10 strokes off his first match score of the year,” Stockton said.
“The guys are all showing improvement in finding a bit more consistency, and that is reflected in their scores.
“With the conditions as windy and cold as it was, the guys played some of their best golf of the year.”
Girls Golf
Klahowya 216, Port Angeles 227
BREMERTON — Maddie Boe led the Roughriders with a nine-hole round of 52 on the Cascade Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
“Senior captain Maddie Boe rebounded after a tough round at home on Tuesday [by] posting her personal-best competitive score,” Port Angeles coach Jacob Lippold said of Thursday’s match.
Hannah Almaden shot a 55 and Lexie Jeffers and Jaden Dugger each carded rounds of 60.
Klahowya’s McKenna Kendall earned medalist honors after shooting a 44.
The Riders (0-3) host North Mason (0-3) on Tuesday.

Bremerton 4, Port Angeles 3
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders were narrowly edged out for the Olympic League victory by the Knights.
Port Angeles picked up wins from doubles pairs Karina Paup-Byrnes and Lum Fu, Summer Olsen and Aeverie Politika and Paulina Crawford and Hailey Horton.
Claire Fritschler fell in her No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-4 to Bremerton’s Emily Nguyen, but coach Stephanie Gochnour still named Fritschler as her player of the match.
“Claire was evenly matched with her opponent and played with perseverance and determination,” Gochnour said.
“She came back [during] the second set after falling behind 5-1.
“Claire told me she looks forward to getting another chance to play Emily again later in the season, with hopefully a win.”
