PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys tennis team opened its season winning four matches against a shorthanded Chimacum squad that only had six eligible players to start the year.
“We have a lot of experienced guys in our program, so I thought they came out ready to play,” said new head coach Brian Gundersen, who took over the team after longtime coach Gil Stockton had heart surgery this summer.
The Riders’ Hayden Woods, who won an amazing 13 regular-season matches in a row last year, started where he left off from last season, beating the Cowboys’ Jonah Diehl 6-0, 6-1.
No. 2 singles’ player Jadon Seibel beat Chimacum’s Mason Lawson 6-0, 6-1.
The Riders’ doubles team of Kyler Tourbin and Brady Nickerson beat Zack Enste and Seth Richey 6-0, 6-0 and the doubles team of Lucas Jarnigan and Milo Whitman beat Gavin Lawson and Ben Martin 6-0, 6-0.
For the Riders, Henry Shaw won a singles match by default, while the doubles teams of Wyatt Hall/Daniel Basden and Kam Noard/Landon Seibel were awarded matches by default.
The Riders (1-0) travel to Sequim for a match at 4 p.m. today. It will be the Wolves’ first meet of the year.
Chimacum will host Olympic at 4 p.m. today.
Girls Soccer
Klahowya 2, Sequim 0
SILVERDALE — The Wolves put forth a solid effort against the traditionally strong Eagles on Tuesday.
“It was a good game,” Sequim coach Derek Vandervelde said. “Klahowya has a really solid program and the girls did well, so I’m proud of them.
“Olivia Hare as our keeper was pretty phenomenal. She was blocking some shots that maybe shouldn’t have been blocked.”
Sequim (0-1-0, 0-1-1) hosts rival Port Angeles on Saturday at 12:45 p.m.
Volleyball Jamboree
SEQUIM — Sequim got off to a nice 2018 with two wins at its season-opening volleyball jamboree.
The Wolves beat Port Townsend 25-7, 25-8, 25-14 and Port Angeles 25-17, 25-9, 26-24.
Port Angeles beat Port Townsend 25-7, 25-9, 25-10.
In jamborees, the matches do not count toward a team’s standings.
Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman is in the unique position of not losing a single player from last season’s playoff team. She didn’t have a single senior on last year’s squad, so while other teams are replacing their seniors, she has nine returning players. The biggest change she sees in her team?
“The important thing right off the bat is that we’re pretty scrappy,” she said. For instance, against the Roughriders, Port Angeles had a 23-20 lead in Game 3 and the Wolves were able to fight back to pull that game and match out.
In the two matches combined, Kali Wiker served 28-for-28 with 10 aces while Isabelle Dennis served 26-for-26 with five aces. Tayler Breckenridge had nine aces.
Breckenridge and Dennis each had 10 digs, while Bobbi Sparks had eight. Against Port Angeles alone, Breckenridge tallied a solid 20 kills.
The jamboree was a good scrimmage for both Port Angeles and Sequim as the Riders and Wolves play again in an Olympic League 2A Division opener at 6:15 p.m. today in Sequim.
Port Townsend’s next match is at home at 6:15 p.m. Friday against Quilcene.
