PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles found a momentary respite from the rain and walloped Class 3A Central Kitsap 14-2 in five innings to open the softball season Tuesday at Dry Creek Elementary School.
“[We] started off the season with strong pitching, timely hitting and great defense,” coach Randy Steinman said.
Ashley Howell swung a big bat for the Roughriders, going 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs.
Lauren Lunt doubled, walked, scored and drove home three RBIs.
Speedster Sierra Robision reached base three times (one hit and two walks) and scored three runs.
Natalie Steinman walked twice, singled and had scored twice.
Callie Hall and Hope O’Connor split the pitching duties for Port Angeles.
Hall allowed one run on five hits in three innings on the mound, striking out five and walking none.
O’Connor gave up one run on one hit while tossing four strikeouts and walking none in two innings.
The Riders (1-0) host Class 4A South Kitsap in a nonleague game today.

Boys Soccer Port Angeles 4, Port Townsend 1
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders scored three straight second-half goals to sink the Redhawks’ chances at an upset on a rainy night at Civic Field on Tuesday.
“It took a while for [us] to take control of the game and Port Townsend did very well to stay in the game despite being short several varsity players,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.
The Riders scored first off a corner kick in the eighth minute.
“Ben Schneider played an in-swinging corner to the far post and Kenny Soule was there to head the ball in,” Saari said.
Port Townsend tied the game four minutes into the second half on a penalty kick.
Schneider answered with a penalty-kick goal in the 58th minute after Jesse Salgado was brought down in the goal box.
“[We] were able to keep the pressure on and add a couple insurance goals late in the game,” Saari said.
“In the 74th minute, Schneider got his second goal of the game when he took a pass from Andrew St. George and beat the Redhawk goalie to the near post.”
Saari said Stuart Methner and Belgian exchange student Tom Lismonde combined on a wall pass in the Redhawks box, but Methner’s close-range shot clanged off the cross bar.
Methner made up for his miss by tapping in a cross from Andrew St. George for his first varsity goal.
Saari named Schneider his offensive player of the match, while Hollund Bailey earned the honor defensivey and Methner, St. George and Soule were praised for their play in transition.
Port Townsend (0-1) hosts Klahowya in its Olympic League 1A Division opener on Friday.
Port Angeles (1-1) opens Olympic League 2A Division play at home against Kingston at 6:45 p.m. Friday.
Sequim 11, Olympic 1
SEQUIM — The Wolves got their season off to a roaring start with an impressive 11-1 Olympic League 2A Division win over the Trojans.
Sequim got four goals and an assist from Liam Harris, while Josiah Urquia had two goals and freshman Michael McAleer had two goals.
“We played some nice good soccer, it was nice to see,” said coach Dave Brasher.
Brasher tabbed Sean Weber as the player of the match for his solid play in the midfield. He also said Brandon Benson played a good game in central defense.
Goalkeep Nick Janikic played the first half and did not give up a goal, while Navy Thomas-Brenske played the second half and gave up Olympic’s lone goal on a penalty kick.
The first-half goals were: Urquia, 12th minute; Harris 16th, minute; Harris, 18th minute; Urquia, Weber, 24th minute; Harris, 28th minute; and Harris, 36th minute. The second-half goals were: Konnor Parrish, 44th minute (header); McAleer, 50th minute; Adrian Funston, 52nd minute; and McAleer, 54th minute.
Sequim (1-0) next hosts Fife at 6:45 p.m. today.
