Crescent 58, Chief Kitsap 44

POULSBO — The Loggers survived an upset bid from the Bears, pulling away with an excellent fourth quarter to get the North Olympic League win.

“What a team effort,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said. “Chief Kitsap is a scrappy bunch of dudes that do not let up. We stressed with our guys constantly to do what we do, just play to our strengths, and not get caught up in a helter-skelter game that Chief Kitsap wanted.”

Ferrier credited the play of guards Mason Owens and Eric Emery.

“Our guards Mason and Eric really controlled the pace of the game and put us in position to have success,” Ferrier said. “We were attacking the basket and getting to the foul line — we shot 25 free throws. We were sharing the ball well, [and] had assists on half of our field goals too. It was just a really balanced, unselfish unit of guys for a big big road league win at a place we’ve never won before.”

Brendan Bergstrom had 20 points to lead the Loggers.

“Brendan was huge for us tonight,” Ferrier said. “His second half was pretty outstanding. He grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals and was just a stud. We got timely buckets from Eric coming down the stretch and Brayden [Emery] was 8 of 10 from the foul line to help seal the win.

I can’t say enough about these guys. We are making progress and doing all the little things better than we did the game before.”

TACOMA — The Cowboys picked up their second consecutive win and did it with defense, according to head coach Mark Bennett.

“Henry Brebberman, Issac Purser and Cole Dotson, especially, played great defense,” Bennett said. “They were disciplined, they worked hard and they were facing some athletic kids.”

Purser led with 29 points, many of them coming in transition off of Chimacum steals.

“That’s how Issac was able to get his points,” Bennett said. “He was out in front, got through their defense and he was able to convert his layups.”

Brebberman added 14 points and six rebounds.

“Henry seemed like he was everywhere on the floor,” Bennett said.

Cody Clark scored 10 and added seven rebounds.

And Bennett had praise for Dotson who scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

“Cole was really there with 11 rebounds,” Bennett said.

“They were beating us getting back offensively, they would release two guys up the court after we shot and it happened several times. We got it fixed and on three straight trips, Cole would get back and play defense without fouling. Three times, he stood straight up, avoided the foul and caused them to miss.”

Bennett said Chimacum finished with just nine turnovers, while totaling 20 assists and 33 rebounds.

The Cowboys (0-4, 2-10) host Forks on Tuesday.
