PORT TOWNSEND — Sequim’s boys and girls golf teams claimed wins over their Port Townsend counterparts in matches at Port Townsend Golf Club.
Paul Jacobsen and Alex McMenamin earned medalist honors in Thursday’s boys and girls matches respectively, each posting rounds of 2-over-par 37.
The Wolves boys won the match 164 to 218. The victory clinched Sequim’s (8-0) second consecutive Olympic League championship.
Andrew Vanderberg was second for the Wolves boys after shooting 39.
Blake Wiker fired a 43 and Josiah Carter a 45 to round out the Sequim boys scores.
Patrick Morton led the Redhawks with a 49. Jacob Madison shot a 55, Caleb Johnson a 56 and Sam Boatman a 58.
The Sequim girls (7-1) topped Port Townsend’s lone girls golfer, Mackenzie Lake, 194 to 265.
Sarah Shea was second for Sequim with a round of 43, Samantha Smith shot a 55 and Christiana Hoesel a 57.
Lake posted a 55 for the Redhawks.
Sequim’s boys and girls teams will golf at North Mason on Tuesday.
The Port Townsend boys will play in the Higgins Memorial at Kitsap Golf and Country Club on Thursday. Sequim is the defending champion of the annual tournament.
Port Angeles 390, North Mason 386
ALLYN — The Roughriders were edged out by the Bulldogs by four strokes in an 18-hole match at Lakeland Village.
Mathew Locke led Port Angeles with a round of 91. Cameron Fouts shot a 96, Logan Kovalenko posted a 100 and Royce Duncan carded a 103.
Eric Jones was the match medalist for North Mason after shooting 85.
The Riders (4-4, 4-5) visit Bremerton on Tuesday.
Sequim duo wins Duke Streeter
PORT ANGELES — Alex McMenamin and Sarah Shea of Sequim teamed to win the girls edition of the annual Duke Streeter Invitational with a 1-under-par 35 at Peninsula Golf Club on Friday.
No team scores were kept at the five-team, two-person scramble event, which also featured host Port Angeles, Capital, Shelton and Klahowya.
Christian Hoesel and Angela Carillo-Burge were third overall for Sequim with a 47.
Samantha Smith and Maddie Withrow posted a 49 for the Wolves and Maddie Uranga and Brittany Gale shot 54.
Olivia Due and Aeverie Politika combined to lead the Roughriders with a 52. Gillian Elofson and Kathryn McMahan teamed for a 57 and Kylea Tucker and Leah Burwell totaled 58.
Boys Soccer Sequim 6, North Mason 0
SEQUIM — The Wolves didn’t allow a single shot all match and erupted for five goals in the second half to move into third place in the Olympic League 2A Division.
The win puts Sequim at 5-3 in the league, one game behind second-place Kingston and one game head of fourth-place Port Angeles.
The Wolves got off to a fast start Thursday, getting a goal in the first minute from Josiah Urquia on a header on a ball from Addison Berg.
“We dominated the first half, but couldn’t put another one in,” said coach Dave Brasher.
Ryan Tolberd broke through with a goal in the 49th minute, with an assist by Patrick McCrorie.
Then Sequim blew up with four goals in 13 minutes. Mathew Craig started the onslaught, with an assist from Tolberd. Four minutes later, Tolberd scored with an assist from Craig to make it 4-0.
Evan James scored in the 75th minute, with an assist to Christian Rocha. Rocha then scored with an assist by Craig in the 77th minute.
Tolberd finished with two goals and an assist, while Craig tallied a goal and two assists. Sequim ended up with 26 shots.
Though he didn’t figure in the scoring, Brasher said Sean Weber was the man of the match for the Wolves, controlling the play in the midfield.
Sequim (5-3, 6-4-2) next plays undefeated North Kitsap on the road at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Bremerton 1, Port Angeles 0 (PKs)
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders lost a tough match at home, going to penalty kicks against Bremerton in a 1-0 defeat.
The Riders picked up a point in the loss for taking the match to a shootout. The Knights won the penalty kicks 5-4.
“The Knights had a lot of pressure on the Port Angeles goal in the first half, but were unable to capitalize on their chances, including a shot that went off the crossbar,” said PA coach Chris Saari.
“Port Angeles stepped up their offense and overall game in the second half and created multiple chances to put the game away. In the end the Riders were unable to finish some really quality opportunities,” Saari said.
Those quality chances included a penalty kick in the finals minutes. Grayson Peet hit the crossbar on one shot, while Stuart Methner broke into the Knight penalty box and had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his shot was saved by the Knights goalie.
Then, Ben Schneider’s penalty kick for the Riders in the 78th minute went over the top of the net.
“In the end all of Port Angeles’ missed opportunities left the door open for Bremerton to win the game in penalty kicks,” Saari said.
Even in the penalty kicks, Port Angeles had a chance to win it as the Riders’ seventh shot would have won the game. Instead, it hit the crossbar. The Knights were finally able to put the game away on their eighth penalty kick.
“Port Angeles goalkeeper Lorenzo DeLaTorre had a solid overall game keeping the Riders in it and making two saves in the penalty shootout. Lorenzo earned [his] fifth shutout of the season in regulation and sudden death overtime,” Saari said. He named DeLaTorre and Hollund Bailey his defensive players of the game.
The Riders ended with 30 shots to the Knights’ 10.
Port Angeles (4-4, 7-5) is now in fourth place in the Olympic League 2A Division, but the Riders get a good chance to move up. They next play last-place Olympic on the road at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Elma 2, Forks 1
ELMA — The Spartans lost in heartbreaking fashion, with an own goal in the final minutes in an Evergreen 1A League game against the Eagles.
Forks has lost two matches to Elma by identical 2-1 scores.
The first half ended with a 0-0 tie. Elma got on the board early in the second half with a goal on a coerner kic, but then the Spartans bounced back with a goal by Sammy Gomez on a breakaway.
With less than two minutes left in the match, an Elma cross in the goal area pinballed around several players, off a Forks player and in the goal.
Coach Joe Morton said he told his players “to keep their heads up. We’re so much further ahead then we’ve been the last two seasons.”
Forks (2-3, 4-7) hosts Montesano at home at 6 p.m. May 2.
