RAYMOND — Forks had trouble with Raymond right away in a 56-27 loss to the Seagulls that ended the Spartans’ chances at a Pacific League girls basketball championship.
Forks (6-3) lost to league-leading Raymond (7-1) at home after a poor fourth quarter.
“This time they went off on us right off the bat,” Spartans coach David Hurn said.
“Kyra Gardner, their standout, had 14 in the first quarter and got hot right away. They had a good home crowd, a band and student section, and they came out and smacked us pretty hard.”
Hurn said the Seagulls played tough defense in the halfcourt.
“And the shots we had, we couldn’t make,” Hurn said.
Forks’ home game against Northwest Christian set for tonight was canceled due to a low number of available Northwest Christian players. The Spartans will host Chief Leschi next Thursday.
“We’re going to have a few practices here just to regroup,” Hurn said. “It was a tough week for us as we had a chance to do something the program hasn’t done in a long time and win a league championship.
“We still have districts ahead of us, and we have shown that we can play with the best teams, but we have to get our confidence and rhythm back.”

BREMERTON — The Wolves hung tight with the first-place Knights for a half, but they couldn’t knock down enough shots in the second half.
“Bremerton shot the ball very well in the second half,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said. “We struggled to finish, but we were getting open looks.”
Guard Jaydin Possin led the Wolves with 13 points and added seven rebounds.
Hayden Eaton led the team with 10 rebounds and posted five points.
Sequim (3-5) hosts Central Kitsap on Wednesday.

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders roared back after two close losses by a combined seven points last week.
“I was happy with our execution, poise and confidence,” coach Kasey Ulin said.
Port Angeles was missing starter Chase Cobb and reserve Michael Soule to ankle injuries but received big lifts from Quanah Wheeler and James Burkardt.
“Quanah stepped into the starting lineup and almost had a triple-double with 10 points, nine assists and eight rebounds,” Ulin said.
“James Burkhardt came off the bench and did a lot of the little things to help us out.”
Wyatt Dunning led Port Angeles with 22 points and eight rebounds.
Freshman Parker Nickerson played in his first varsity game and hit a 3-pointer, Ulin said.
The Riders (6-2) step out of Olympic League play to host state powerhouse Lynden tonight.

Port Angeles wins pair
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders stayed in the hunt for an Olympic League championship and earned a measure of revenge for an earlier head-to-head loss to Central Kitsap with a dual-meet win Wednesday.
“CK beat us three weeks ago, and we redeemed ourselves,” coach Rob Gale said of his squad’s narrow 41-37 win over the Cougars.
“If we can win the remaining two duals against Olympic and then North Kitsap and Bremerton, we will win league champs.”
Port Angeles also beat East Jefferson 66-16 in the other dual.
Gale said the Riders opened up with some big wins to gain an early lead over Central Kitsap.
“We started at 145 pounds and right off the bat our two-time state placer Adam Borde picked up a pin, and Zach Gavin pinned his guy at 152,” Gale said.
“Sophomore Tom Arand pulled out a good win at 182.”
Central Kitsap’s strongest wrestlers are in the 126, 132 and 138 weight classes, and Port Angeles was able to wrestle strategically to secure the team win.
“Ethan Abrams, a freshman who has wrestled club with us for years, wrestled one of their top guys at 132, and Ethan went out and didn’t get pinned,” Gale said.
“And it came down to their best wrestler at 138 against our sophomore Ray Rodriguez. All Ray needed to do [to preserve the win] was not get pinned, and he only gave up a majority decision.”
Port Angeles will wrestle at Olympic next Wednesday.

POULSBO — The Roughriders improved to 8-1 with a road win Wednesday.
“North Kitsap is always a tough team, especially at home, and we had several matches come down to a tie-breaker. Our guys found a way to win the big points at the end, and I couldn’t be happier for them,” said coach Brian Gundersen.
The players of the match were the No. 2 doubles team, Seth Woods and Jacob Miller.
“Seth and Jacob played their best tennis of the year. We knew today would be tough, and they brought their A game,” Gundersen said.
