PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Forks soccer falls at home

By Pierre LaBossiere

Peninsula Daily News

FORKS — Forks played Montesano tough, going into halftime Tuesday night tied 0-0, but the Spartans boys soccer team gave up three goals in the second half, losing 3-0, likely ending their chances at the postseason.

Forks put themselves in a position for a possible postseason berth with a 12-0 win Monday over Tenino. Eight different Spartans scored in the Tenino game, including Samuel Gomez, who had a hat trick.

Alex Martinez and Ivan Torres each scored two goals, while Saul Avila, Hugo Sandoval, Willie Jeronimo and Julio Salazar all scored. Goalie Gabe Terrones even came out of keeper position to score a goal.

Coach Joe Morton said he’s proud of his team for its five-win season. The Spartans only won one game each of the past two seasons, so this year saw a dramatic improvement to 5-8, (3-4 in Evergreen 1A play).

“All in all, it was a successful year. We’re really upbeat,” Morton said. “1-15 to 5-8 is a nice jump.”

Morton said there are also some good freshmen coming up to the varsity team and that Forks will only be getting better.

The Spartans have one more game at Hoquiam tonight with an extreme longshot at making postseason. Forks would have to beat first-place Hoquiam, which the Spartans have already done this year. But, then Tenino, which has a weak team and has not won a game all year, would have to beat Montesano today for the Spartans to sneak into the third and final playoff spot.

Baseball Port Angeles 18, Bremerton 0

BREMERTON — The Roughriders wrapped up their regular season with an 18-0 shellacking of the Knights on the road.

The win Tuesday leaves Port Angeles at 9-3 in the Olympic League 2A Division (11-6 overall). The Riders will begin 2A District play Saturday as the No. 2 seed out of the Olympic League.

They will play the No. 8 seed out the South Puget Sound League at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton at 4 p.m.

The Riders’ Colton McGuffey, Kyle Blankenship and Andrew Pena combined to throw a three-hitter with just one walk. McGuffey went the first two innings of the five-inning game and picked up the win.

Meanwhile, the Riders rapped out 14 hits of their own. McGuffey went 3 for 3 with four RBIs, Luke Angevine went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Joel Wood went 2 for 2 with two doubles, three RBIs and two walks and Noah McGoff was 2 for 4 with three RBI.

“This was a good response to a tough [3-2] loss [Monday] night with North Kitsap. It was good to see our guys come out aggressive at the plate. Pitchers did a good job throwing strikes and pitching off of their fastballs. They were all competing in the zone well. Good end of regular season for us,” said coach Karl Myers.

Forks 7, Tenino 3

TENINO — Billy Palmer pitched a complete game and the Spartans won a much-needed game on the road against the Beavers, creating a huge logjam in the Evergreen 1A League and staying alive for second place.

“We took care of the ball on defense and offensively, we took advantage of everything we were given,” said coach Jason Richard.

The Spartans were scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Beavers, but the nightcap was rained out, so an extremely important game will be played in Tenino tonight between the Spartans and Beavers.

Forks could finish anywhere between second place or in fifth completely out of the postseason, based on the Spartans’ final two games. With Tuesday’s win over Tenino, Forks is 4-6, Tenino 5-6, Elma 4-7 and Hoquiam 3-6. Montesano has already clinched the Evergreen 1A title at 9-0.

If Forks beats Tenino again tonight, the Spartans will jump into second place. The Spartans finish their season with a home game at 4 p.m. Friday against Montesano.

Meanwhile, Elma and Hoquiam play each other and Hoquiam also has a doubleheader rainout make up against Montesano left to play.

“There’s a lot of different scenarios. It’s kind of exciting,” Richard said.

Forks will likely have to play the rest of the year without senior Parker Browning due to a shoulder injury, Richard said. He said it’s possible that Browning could return for postseason but that the team doesn’t want to rush him back and cause further injury.

Softball Quilcene 13, Kingston 3

QUILCENE — Madison Coffee went 4 for 4 with a triple and a home run and the Rangers racked up 17 total hits as Quilcene beat 2A Kingston 13-3 in six innings.

The Rangers’ defense and pitching continue to be outstanding, said coach Mark Thompson. Quilcene also is averaging 14 runs a game this season.

“Bailey [Kieffer] pitched well against a tough lineup. She did better at keeping the ball down, and Erin [Macedo] continues to be outstanding behind the plate. Defensively we have been pretty good,” Thompson said.

“Eight players contributing for 17 hits against 2A competition is encouraging. We had some really good at bats today,” Thompson said.

Alexis Gray went 2-4 with a game-ending triple and 3 RBIs, while Kieffer went 3 for 3, scoring 3 runs.

Quilcene (4-0, 10-1) is making up a number of rainouts this week. The Rangers played Muckleshoot in a doubleheader Wednesday and will next play at home at 3 p.m. Friday against Klahowya.

Forks 13, Tenino 1 (Suspended, 3 innings)

TENINO — Forks was still trying to see if a game against Tenino that was suspended due to rain can be finished so the Spartans can qualify for their first 1A District postseason berth since at least 2008.

The Spartans, in fourth place in the Evergreen 1A League, were ahead of Tenino 13-1 with runners on first and third and no outs in the third inning Tuesday evening. A game doesn’t become official until four full innings.

Coach Dennis Dean said it hadn’t been decided yet if or where or even where the game could be completed (since Tenino is a long road trip for Forks for what would essentially be one inning), or if Tenino might just forfeit the game.

If Forks (1-5, 8-6) can get a win, that gives the Spartans two league wins and a trip to the postseason. The Spartans have outscored their opponents in their past four games 52-1.
