BEAVER — The Forks and Hoquiam softball teams had the same number of hits, but Hoquiam did a better job of bunching its hits and was able to beat the Spartans 5-0 Tuesday.
The Spartans had no errors in the game. The difference was two big triples by the Grizzlies’ Jade Cox. Cox drove in two runs with her triples and came in to score from third base both times.
“All we had were four little singles. They had a slow pitcher and we don’t hit slow pitching very well,” said coach Dennis Dean.
“We played good defense, we had good pitching. We just didn’t hit the ball,” Dean said.
Chloe Leverington took the loss on the mound for the Spartans, giving up four hits while striking out eight and walking two.
Forks is again playing in one of the absolute toughest leagues in Class 1A softball. Last season, the Evergreen 1A’s Elma finished second at the state 1A tournament, while Montesano finished third. The year before, Montesano won the state championship while Hoquiam came in third in the state.
This year, Montesano and Elma have both beaten North Kitsap, a good 2A team.
Dean is looking at fighting for third behind Elma and Montesano, and he believes that next time, the Spartans will get past Hoquiam.
“I didn’t expect to lose,” Dean said.
In addition to all of those powerful Evergreen 1A teams, the Spartans also play Lakeside on their schedule at Montesano on April 1. Lakeside is the defending 1A state champion.
First, the Spartans (0-1, 1-2) will play at Tenino (0-0, 2-3) today and they will play 3A Seattle Prep (1-3) and Coupeville (3-3) in a doubleheader at Billy Whiteshoes Memorial Park beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Baseball Sequim 11, Crosspoint 1
SEQUIM — The Young brothers had monster games as the Wolves walloped the Warriors Tuesday.
Sequim outhit Crosspoint 17-3 on Tuesday, with a quintet of Wolves pitchers combining to throw a 10-strikeout gem against the Warriors. That’s 10 strikeouts in just five innings.
Michael and Johnnie Young combined to go 6 for 8 at the plate with 11 total bases for the brothers. Michael Young went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Johnnie Young went 3 for 4 with a triple, a run scored and four RBIs.
Michael Grubb also went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.
Silas Thomas was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Joey Oliver was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Zach McCracken was 2 for 3. Connor Bear scored three runs.
On the mound, Thomas, Michael Young, Oliver, Eaton and Caleb Pozernick each pitched one inning. Eaton and Michael Young each pitched hitless innings, with Eaton striking out all three batters he faced. Young, Oliver and Pozernick each struck out two batters in one inning.
Sequim (1-2, 5-3) returns to Olympic League 2A Division play with a game at home at 4:15 p.m. against Bremerton (0-3, 1-6).

SEQUIM — Paul Jacobsen’s shot an even-par round of 35 on the back nine at Cedars at Dungeness to earn medalist honors in the Wolves’ win over the Buccaneers.
Sequim’s Blake Wiker posted a 2-over-par 37 to finish second overall and teammate Liam Payne was third with a 41.
Freshman Ben Sweet added a 44 while classmate Dom Ricobene shot 45 and Garrett Hoesel fired a 49.
Sequim (2-0) faced rival Port Angeles late Wednesday. The Wolves will be off until an April 8 home match against Bremerton.
Port Angeles 190, North Kitsap 221
PORT ANGELES — Nate Drake’s round of 7-over-par 43 earned medalist honors as the Roughriders swung past the Vikings in a nine-hole match at Peninsula Golf Club on Tuesday.
Cameron Fouts added a 46 for Port Angeles, while Derek Sparks shot a 48 and Ryan Wolfgang contributed a round of 53.
The Riders (4-1) hosted Sequim late Wednesday and are off for spring break. Port Angeles will host Klahowya on April 10.
Girls Golf North Kitsap 240, Port Angeles 265
PORT ANGELES — Kat McMahan led the Roughriders with a nine-hole score of 56 at Peninsula Golf Club on Tuesday.
MaKayla Peabody shot a 66 and Katie Marchant carded a 71 for Port Angeles.
The Vikings’ Greta Jagodinski earned medalist honors with the low round of 55.
Port Angeles (2-3) hosted Sequim on Wednesday. The Riders are off for spring break until a home match with Klahowya on April 10.
