PORT TOWNSEND — Forks’ pitching and bats were hot in a nonleague doubleheader sweep on the road as the Spartans triumphed 12-3 and 10-0 against Port Townsend.
In game one, Gavin Palmer went 4 for 5 with three doubles and four RBIs for Forks, while Brett Moody had nine strikeouts on the mound and four RBIs at the plate.
Reece Blattner and Billy Palmer combined to throw a shutout in the second game, while Chance Wilson hit a home run to end the game for the Spartans because of the 10-run rule.
“We’re gaining momentum right now,” said Forks coach Jason Richard.
Richard hopes the Spartans can take that momentum into league play in an important league doubleheader Friday against Elma on the road beginning at 3 p.m.
The Spartans are 3-4 in league and 5-8 overall, a half game out of second place in the Evergreen 1A League.
Port Townsend (0-5, 0-9) plays at Coupeville at 3:30 p.m. today.
Coupeville 6, Chimacum 5, 10 innings
CHIMACUM — The Cowboys lost a heartbreaker, going 10 innings before falling to the Olympic League 1A Division rival Wolves.
“We had opportunities, we just didn’t come through in the clutch,” said coach Bob Eldridge.
Eldridge said the Cowboys stranded two runners at third and had another runner thrown out at the plate.
The Cowboys banged out 12 hits in the loss,which Eldridge said “is our best hitting performance of the year.”
The trio of Cole Dotson, Issac Purser and Lane Dotson combined for 10 strikeouts. Eldridge said Purser pitched especially well in relief,
“He really shut them down,” he said.
Carson McConnell went 3 for 4, while Matthew Bainbridge was 3 for 5 with two runs scored, and Lane Dotson hit 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Purser was 2 for 5 with a run scored.
The loss puts Chimacum (2-3, 4-5) a game behind Coupeville for second place in division play. The Cowboys play first-place and undefeated in league Klahowya on the road at 4:15 p.m. today.
Then, they host Coupeville again at 4:15 p.m. Friday in a critical game for postseason position.
Softball Sequim 8, Chimacum 4
SEQUIM — The Wolves scored three runs in the third and three in the fourth to fend of the Cowboys 8-4 in a nonleague game.
Sequim pitcher Shelby Jones went the distance Monday, giving up just six hits and three runs in seven innings to hand Chimacum only their second loss of the year.
Chloie Sparks went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Wolves while Adrienne Haggerty went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Isabelle Dennis had a double and an RBI. Latisha Robideau also scored two runs.
Mechelle Nisbet went 2 for 4 for Chimacum with a double and an RBI. Maddie Dowling added two RBIs for the Cowboys. Cowboys pitcher Holly Snider only gave up five earbed runs in six innings, but four errors cost the Cowboys three unearned runs.
Sequim (4-3, 6-6) next plays at Port Angeles at 4:15 p.m. today, while Chimacum (4-0, 6-2) plays at Klahowya at 4:15 p.m. today.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders struggled in a loss to the Olympic League-leading Vikings (9-1) on Monday.
Port Angeles’ No. 1 doubles team of Audrey Little and Hanna Brown won their first set in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss against North Kitsap’s Skylar Schmitt and Miranda Castillo, the lone match to go the full three sets.
Coach Stephanie Gochnour named Little and Brown as her players of the match.
