COUPEVILLE — The Chimacum baseball team got an outstanding performance from pitcher Issac Purser, but two small mistakes in the third inning cost the Cowboys in a 1-0 pitchers’ duel loss.
Purser definitely deserved a win, going six innings, giving up four hits, four walks and no earned runs while striking out eight. Coupeville’s Matt Hilborn was just slightly better, shutting out Chimacum on three hits while striking out nine.
The difference in the game? A dropped third strike that cost the Cowboys the third out of the third inning and loaded up the bases. Purser then walked the next batter to give up an unearned run, the only run of the game.
Matthew Bainbridge had a double and a stolen base for the Cowboys, while Koby Eldridge and Arron Serrato had hits.
The loss drops Chimacum into a first-place tie with Coupeville for first place in the Olympic League 1A Division.
Chimacum (4-1, 6-7) beat the Wolves 5-4 earlier in the season and the Cowboys get a chance to take the rubber match with Coupeville (4-1, 10-4), facing the Wolves again at 4 p.m. Friday in Coupeville in a game that will decide the league championship.

SEQUIM — The Wolves got a shutout 3-hit performance from a pair of pitchers and a huge game from Michael Grubb in blanking the Eagles.
Cameron Welcher started Monday’s nonleague game, going four innings and giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out five. Eric Washburn pitched the fifth, giving up two hits, but striking out two and giving up no runs.
Grubb went 2 for 3 with two runs and four RBIs, while Ryan Clark went 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Ian Miller didn’t have a hit but drove in two runs and scored two runs. Joey Oliver also had a hit, a walk and two runs scored.
Sequim (2-6, 6-7) next plays today at home at 4:15 p.m. against Port Angeles (7-1, 11-3).

CHIMACUM — The Roughriders swept the singles matches and split four doubles matches with the Cowboys.
Several of the matches were close and went to tiebreakers.
Port Angeles’ Emily Metzler beat Chimacum’s Madison Koss, going 11-9 in a third-set tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 6-2, 1-6.
The Cowboys’ duo of Grace Yaley and Chloe Patterson had an exceptionally long match in beating Jocelyn Reifenstahl and Casandra Shamp of Port Angeles, needing two tiebreakers to win. Yaley and Patterson won 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 13-11.
The Roughriders’ doubles team of Emily Rygaard and Kyla Tagg also had a tiebreaker with Chimacum’s Denise Lopez and Vilma Jurma, winning 4-6, 7-5, 10-0. Coach Stephanie Gochnour named Rygaard the Tagg the players of the match for their win.
In another close win, Roughrider Summer Olsen beat Gladys Heat 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
Port Angeles (5-4, 5-4) next plays at Bremerton (1-8, 2-8) at 4 p.m. today. Chimacum (3-7, 3-7) played Coupeville Tuesday after press deadline and will next play at home at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Klahowya.

POULSBO — The Wolves had been undefeated in league and went up against the Vikings for the Olympic League lead, but fell on the road 5-2.
Winning their matches were Sequim’s No. 1 doubles team of Jessica Dietzman and Kalli Wiker, who beat Ami and Noey Barreith 6-1, 6-1. The Wolves’ No. 2 doubles team of McKenna Hastings and Ashley Rosales beat Tori Carver and Eunice Moran 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.
Most of the other matches were quick two-setters, though Sequim’s Emily Bundy put up a good battle against North Kitsap’s Jackie Marshall, as Marshall won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Sequim (9-1, 9-1) still sits solidly in second place, with a two-loss lead over third-place Kingston. The Wolves played North Kitsap (10-0, 10-0) against Tuesday with a chance to get revenge, then next play at Klahowya at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

TENINO — Britney Dean pitched a one-hitter through five innings and helped her own cause with a double and a triple as the Spartans (1-3, 8-4) picked up an important Evergreen League 1A win.
Four of the five Evergreen League teams will make the district playoffs, so this win coupled with a win at home against Tenino next week would seal a district bid for the Spartans.
Forks coach Dennis Dean said his team “teed off on it pretty good” against the Beavers’ freshman pitcher.
“Jayden Olson was 3 for 3 with two doubles and a triple and Rian Peters was 3 for 4 with two doubles and a triple,” Dean said.
“We played everybody and it went pretty well.”
Elliahna Kilmer went 2 for 2 and Myah Rondeau was 2 for 3 with a double for the Spartans.
Forks plays powerhouse Montesano (4-0, 9-1) today in an away doubleheader.
