PREP SPORTS: Rough road trips for Port Angeles and Sequim boys soccer

PA golfers sweep North Kitsap at Port Ludlow

BELFAIR — Port Angeles and Sequim both came away from road losses to No. 2 Bainbridge and bottom-feeder North Mason with heads hanging after the Roughriders and Wolves struggled in Tuesday’s Olympic League boys soccer contests.

Fighting for a playoff spot, Sequim dropped a disappointing 2-1 decision to the Bulldogs, a game in which the Wolves couldn’t get untracked all night long against a North Mason team that came in with just one victory on the season.

“Absolute deserved defeat,” coach Dave Breckenridge said. “We did not play soccer last night. It’s always tough when we take a two-hour bus ride and sit for another 1½ hours [JV game] before playing.

“Our boys had no energy what so ever. We were disconnected, and noncommunication was our enemy.”

Sequim (5-5) scored its lone goal on a penalty kick.

“We did get a well-deserved penalty on Colten Anderson,” Breckenridge said. “Colten took it and got his first goal of the season as a freshman. Unfortunately, it was the only positive in the match. I feel our biggest defeat is ourselves. Hopefully we can overcome that and continue a run for the district tournament.”

Sequim (5-5, 5-5) hosts No. 2 Bainbridge (9-0, 11-0) on Friday.

Bainbridge 12, Port Angeles 0

BAINBRIDGE — The Riders were routed by an undefeated Spartans squad that is up to No. 2 in the Class 2A RPI.

Port Angeles came out flat and allowed two early goals, coach Chris Saari said.

“It went downhill from there and PA faced a 5-0 halftime deficit,” Saari said. “[We] subbed all our available reserves at halftime and Bainbridge put up seven more goals in the second half.

“It was a disappointing performance against a really good team for Port Angeles. Having lost only 4-1 the first time at home to Bainbridge the Riders defense got exposed this time at Bainbridge. It was a good reality check for Port Angeles to know that they have a lot to work on before the end of the season.”

Reserves Leif Moody and Jordan Saluskin did well late in the game, Saari said.

“Senior Leif Moody did a good job at right back in the second half for Port Angeles with his work rate defensively,” Saari said.

“Sophomore Jordan Saluskin got in the game for the last eight minutes and came up with three or four big saves in a short period of time for PA.”

Port Angeles (6-3, 8-4) played at Kingston (1-8, 2-9) late Wednesday.

Girls Golf Port Angeles 213, North Kitsap 242

PORT LUDLOW — Mia Neff and Claire Osterberg each posted nine-hole rounds of 51 for the Riders in a win over North Kitsap at Port Ludlow Golf Course.

Autumn Wilson-Rowland had a 53 for Port Angeles, Malena Marquez shot a 58, Layla Parker added a 63 and Lainey Rudd posted a 70.

Boys Golf Port Angeles 173, North Kitsap 181

PORT LUDLOW — The Riders edged the Vikings in a close match at Port Ludlow Golf Course.

Port Angeles’ depth aided the team against North Kitsap’s home course knowledge.

The Riders’ scoring players finished between third and sixth with Sky Gelder taking third with a 6-over-par 42. Austin Worthington and Tate Alton tied for fourth, one stroke behind Gelder for Port Angeles.

Cale Wentz added a 45, while Max Gagnon shot 46 and Noah Myers a 51.

Matix Thorne was the match medalist at 3-over-par 39 for North Kitsap.

Girls Tennis Bainbridge 7, Port Angeles 0

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls tennis team lost to league leader Bainbridge 7-0.
