KINGSTON — Leia Larson led Port Angeles to a second-place team finish as the Roughriders and Sequim opened the cross-country season at Wednesday’s Olympic League Opener, a 3,200-meter run around the grounds at Kingston High School.
Larson ended up seventh overall with a time of 13 minutes, 40.91 seconds as Port Angeles tallied 94 points, well back of first-place Bainbridge (19 points).
“The girls also had a strong showing with Leia Larson finishing first among the lady Riders and Miriam Cobb, Faerin Tait and freshman Storey Schmidt close behind,” coach Angie Gooding said.
Cobb, a sophomore, finished 14th (14:19.48), while Tate was 16th in 14:24.87 and Schmidt 17th in 14:25.3.
Dawn Hulstedt paced Sequim, earning the highest individual finish of any Peninsula athlete, sixth in 13.31.58. The Wolves placed third overall with 107 points. Sequim freshman Marea Denton was 25th with a time of 15:12.47 and Birdie Pyeatt was 27th (15.21.16).
Bainbridge earned the win on the boys side (28 points), while Port Angeles was sixth (155) and Sequim seventh (187).
Andre Campbell was the fastest in 11:36.44 for the Riders. Easton Dempsey placed 28th for Port Angeles in 11:57.23.
Sequim’s top runner was sophomore Adrian Osborne, who placed 14th in 11:29.84.
“We have a young team this year, but despite that, we’re going to do some great things and make some great times this season,” coach Rodger Johnson said.

Sequim 77, Olympic 73
BREMERTON — Three Wolves earned district qualifying times in five events as Sequim opened with a close win over the Trojans.
“It was a great start to the season with some personal best and district qualifying times,” coach Sarah Thorson said. “Sequim took 1st place in six of the 11 events against Olympic.”
Annie Ellefson earned district times in the 100-yard breaststroke in one minute, 20.94 seconds and the 200-yard freestyle in 2:22.65.
Ava Shinkle qualified for the district meet in the 100 individual medley (2:29.38) and the 100 freestyle (1:01.38).
Melia Nelson also made the district meet with a time of 6:29.2 in the 500 freestyle.
“Our relays looked strong with Sequim taking first place in the 200 redley relay ( Nelson, Ellefson, Shinkle and Addison Long) with a time of: 2:12.57 and the 400 free relay (Shinkle, Nelson, Beglyakov and Annie Ellefson) with a time of: 4:29.86.

CHIMACUM — The Rivals were led by Sophia Petta’s 20 digs and Penina Vailolo’s 10 kills and four blocks in a loss to the Tarriers.
“It was a tough game,” coach Carrie Beebe said. “The girls looked good, but didn’t bring their best play until the last set that went 21-25. Each game they get stronger.
East Jefferson hosts University Prep at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Chimacum.
