PORT ANGELES — Tickets still remain for the Port Angeles High School Athletic Hall of Fame Induction dinner, which will be held Aug. 21 at Civic Field.
The classes of 2020 and 2021 are being inducted together as last year’s event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eleven Roughrider greats from the Hall of Fame Class of 2020, three from the Class of 2021 and the 1966 boys and 1986 girls basketball teams will be inducted. The event also was moved from the Vern Burton Community Center to Civic Field so it could be held outdoors.
One of the benefits of the event moving to Civic Field is it will be bigger than ever, said Hall of Fame Chairman Bruce Skinner. So far, 700 tickets have been sold, far beyond the 550 that could be held in the Vern Burton Center. Skinner said as many as 900 tickets could be sold.
“We are conducting the event outdoors so that it can be done safely. We will follow all Washington State and Clallam County guidelines,” Skinner said.
He added that with the chance to hold the biggest fundraiser dinner ever in Port Angeles, “now there’s a second reason” to hold it at Civic Field.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Port Angeles High School athletics.
The 2021 inductees are, in alphabetical order:
• Pete Hohman, football and track, 1964-1973.
• Roger Oakes, team physician, 1974-1997.
• Jan Urfer, gymnastics, 1990-2004. Urfer coached for 25 years at Port Angeles High School and was inducted into the Washington State Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2001.
The Class of 2020 inductees are:
• Curt Bagby, football and basketball coach, 1974-1992. Coached Girls basketball to second in the state in 1986.
• Austin Fahrenholtz, diving, 2012. Two-time high school state diving champion.
• Sam Hurworth, football, 1957. Led the state in scoring in 1956.
• Matt Lane, baseball, 2003. Hit .702 during his senior year and went on to be the starting catcher at the University of Washington.
• Sonny Luke, football, 1960. Second team all-state.
• Jenny Nixon, swimming, 1989. Was member of the state championship 400-freestyle relay team and went on to be the captain of the University of Washington swim team.
• Bob Peterson, football, 1963. Named to the Big 33 High School All-American team and played collegiately at Stanford. Served as the U.S. Air Force aide to President Jimmy Carter.
• Janessa Roening, softball, 2002. The Most Valuable Player in the Olympic League, she went on to earn All Big 12 honors at the University of Missouri.
• Bob Sheedy, track and cross country. Won league track and cross country championships 30 times. He was the head track coach at PAHS for 42 years and also won four national masters championships in the pentathlon.
• Cherie Simkins, badminton, triathlete, 1962. Won Port Angeles’ first national badminton title. She went on to run 26 Ironman races, earning 18 wins and 13 world championship titles.
• Randy Steinman, 1983. A pitcher, third baseman and shortstop, Steinman was All-State as a pitcher. Longtime baseball and softball coach. In 2017, he led the Port Angeles softball team to a second-place finish at state.
• The 1966 boys and 1986 girls basketball teams finished second in the state, the highest level ever for those programs.
