MERCER ISLAND — Quilcene followed up its first loss of the season with a three-set victory over the Northwest Yeshiva 613s in Sea-Tac League volleyball play.
The Rangers took each set by at least 10 points, winning 25-11, 25-15, 25-13.
Freshman Bailey Kieffer completed 21 of her 22 serves with eight aces and four kills, followed by freshman Katie Bailey with 18 completions and nine aces, as well as four kills and three digs. Freshman Allie Jones added three tips and 14 assists.
With Friday’s win, Quilcene improves to 7-1 on the season and 2-1 in league.
Earlier in the week, the Rangers fell to Rainier Christian 25-20, 25-27, 25-20, 25-16.
Kiani Clissold completed 21 serves and came up with six aces and 13 kills for the Rangers, while freshman setter Allie Jones put up 20 assists and had three tips.
Freshman Bailey Kieffer connected all 14 of her serves, and added two aces and two kills. Sophomore Megan Weller served a single ace and had five kills.
“This was a long week on the road, but was good preparation for next week with back-to-back away and home games next Monday and Tuesday,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell said.
“We were much more competitive against Rainier Christian this year compared to last year.”
North Kitsap 3, Sequim 2
SEQUIM — The Wolves suffered their first Olympic League loss of the season in a five-set battle of unbeaten volleyball teams.
North Kitsap moves to 3-0 in league play after beating Sequim 25-12, 25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 15-7.
Emily Wallner and Vanessa Martinez both pulled nine digs for the Wolves (3-1, 6-4), and Sydney Munn added five kills and three aces, followed by Emma LeBlanc who sent 14 serves out and Alyse Armstrong who capped 15 successful serves with a single ace.
Wallner made 12 kills, Harker eight and Kylee Salazar eight.
Wallner and Kate Harker also stuffed the ball twice and three times, respectively.
Alyse Armstrong finished with 30 assists. Hannah Hudson and LeBlanc contributed 28 and 24 digs, respectively.
Crescent 3, Clallam Bay 0
CLALLAM BAY — The Loggers moved to 2-0 in North Olympic League volleyball play with a three-set victory over the Bruins 25-10, 25-15, 25-23.
“Solid game for us,” Crescent coach Alex Baker said of Thursday’s game.
Shannon Williams served 18 for 18 with eight aces, two tips for points and three kills for the Loggers. Teammate Lauren Hartley served 13/17 with three aces a tip and three kills.
Baker was especially pleased with freshman backup setter Alyssa Huddo, who had four assists in her first varsity action.
Cross Country
Port Angeles girls lose appeal, take second
SILVERDALE — Through a technicality, the Vikings beat the Roughriders in a three-way meet hosted by Klahowya.
Port Angeles initially beat North Kitsap 30-32, but officials disqualified the Riders’ top two runners for taking a wrong turn coming out of the woods.
With the mistake, the runners actually ran farther than the 3.1-mile course, but they managed to finished fourth and fifth.
Once the Roughrider front two girls were disqualified, the adjusted score showed North Kitsap the winners.
The rest of the Port Angeles pack came in sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth to edge ou Klahowya.
“Well, a rule is a rule,” said assistant coach Pat Durr.
“Even though they ran farther, and got no advantage by taking a wrong turn, they did not complete the required course.
“I have tremendous empathy for them, though. Even with a GPS in my car, I’m always getting lost when I drive.
“It will be settled at the league championship.”
Annika Pederson came in first for the Riders with a 22:19 for the 5K course, followed by Taylor Jones with 22:24 and Dove Lucas at 22:26.
Boys Tennis
Port Angeles, 7, PT/Chimacum 0
PORT ANGELES — The Riders improved their season record to 7-1 by with a victory over Chimacum/Port Townsend 7-0.
The Riders only dropped one set on their way to victory.
“I’m really pleased with how much our guys have improved this season,” said Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen.
Singles players Nick Fritschler, Micah Needham and Elliott Soelter all solidly defeated their opposition.
Daniel Manwell and Hayden Erdmann gave up their second set to Wyatt Savidge and Dylan Glessing, but rebounded on the third set for a match win.
Gundersen singled out Elliott Soelter as the player of the match.
“Elliott stepped in and played some singles for us today, and I thought he played really well,” Gunderson said.
Port Angeles travels to North Mason on Monday.
Girls Soccer
Klahowya 5, Port Townsend 0
PORT TOWNSEND — After giving up three goals in the first half, coach Colin Foden decided to swap his players around to give them experience at different positions.
“It was a disappointing half in which the team defended well and occasionally counter-attacked, but still gave away some ‘soft’ goals,” Foden said of Thursday’s match.
“With a win unlikely, in the second half it was time to experiment.”
He moved goalkeeper Malia Henderson up to play offense, giving her chances to score. Shenoa Snyder made her debut in goal and was rarely troubled.
While Lily Murock and Brenna Latchford controlled midfield, and Jewel Johnson maintained a constant, threatening presence to Klahowya.
“Two very late goals could have been avoided, but overall the team showed a much improved second half,” Foden said.
