QUILCENE — Quilcene outlasted Mount Rainier Lutheran in four sets in 1B Sea-Tac League volleyball play.
After splitting a pair of tight games, the Rangers dominated the remainder of the match, winning 25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 25-12.
“Our gameplay was much better . . . and we worked on focusing and playing smart,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell said.
“There has been outstanding passing by our serve-receive and we are working on our net play.
“For such a young team, we are working to play well in pressure situations so these close games have been great learning experiences.”
The Rangers enjoyed solid serving in Tuesday’s match.
Freshman Bailey Kieffer was a perfect 18 for 18 with five aces, Megan Weller was 20/24 with five aces, Kiani Clissold was 17/20 with five aces, Katie Baily was 15/17 with six aces, and Allie Jones was 12/14 with two aces.
Clissold led Quilcene with 12 kills, while Bailey added eight and Weller and Sammy Rae finished with five.
Jones also had 27 assists.
Defensively, Weller topped the Rangers with 11 digs, and Clissold contributed three blocks.
“We only have three more league games, and we are looking to be ready for them,” Crowell said after Tuesday’s game.
“The Sea-Tac 1B is a very competitive league with a lot of talent.”
Quilcene got a dose of how difficult the league is during a three-set loss at Evergreen Lutheran on Monday.
Clissold again had a solid game, going 10 for 14 on serves with six aces. She also had 10 kills and two blocks.
Rae contributed three kills, three blocks and four digs to go along with 6/7 serving and one ace.
The Rangers (3-2, 8-2) return to action with a nonleague game at Wishkah Valley today.
Port Angeles 3, Kingston 1
KINGSTON — The Roughriders earned a big road win over a fellow Olympic League volleyball contender.
With the win, Port Angeles’ undefeated league record remains intact, and the Riders (4-0, 6-3) remain at the top of the league standings with North Kitsap (4-0, 10-0).
The Buccaneers, who entered Tuesday’s game with only one league loss, fall to 3-2 in league play (5-4 overall).
Port Angeles beat Kingston in four sets 25-17, 25-19, 14-25, 26-24.
The Riders won the first two sets, but the Buccaneers proved its meddle with a dominating third-set win and then pushed Port Angeles to the limit in the fourth set.
“The girls played well the first two sets despite Kingston’s scrappiness and perseverance,” Riders coach Christine Halberg said.
“There were many long rallies and crazy saves throughout the night. We blocked well and had some impressive kills.
“In game three we struggled to get started. In game four it went back and forth with the score being tied up after every couple points.”
Port Angeles was led by strong games from Kendra Harvey and Bailee Jones.
Harvey topped the Riders with 32 digs. She also served 13 for 15 with one ace.
Jones was a perfect 12/12 serving with two aces, to go along with a team-high nine kills and two blocks and two digs.
Brittany Nordberg had a great night serving, going 22/22 with two aces.
Holli Williams was 11/12 serving with four aces. She also contributed 18 assists, 11 digs and two kills.
Maddy Hinrichs finished with 15 digs and seven kills, and Sarah Steinman had seven digs and five kills.
Steinman also served 10/12 with an ace, including serving the winning match point, which hit the top of the tape a dribbled over.
Port Angeles hosts another league contender in Klahowya (3-2, 7-3) today at home.
On Tuesday, the Riders JV team beat Klahowya 25-18, 25-16, 16-25.
Girls Soccer
North Mason 2, Port Townsend 1
BELFAIR — A strong second half wasn’t enough to earn the Redskins their first win of the season.
The Bulldogs scored first on a goal by Tegan Daviscourt in the 18th minute.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Port Townsend controlled much of the second half.
Five minutes into the half, nifty passing by four players set up Jewel Johnson with a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.
“She just doesn’t miss those chances,” Redskins coach Colin Foden said.
Emily Slough earned the assist on Johnson’s 43rd-minute goal.
Daviscourt scored against in the 57th minute on a breakaway, and Port Townsend was unable to score the equalizer.
“A terrific team performance with impressive performances from Anne Meek, Emily Slough, Becca Stewart, Brenna Latchford, Natalee Taylor, Jewel Johnson and Shenoa Snyder,” Foden said.
The Redskins host North Kitsap today at Memorial Field.
Boys Tennis
Klahowya 4, Port Angeles 3
SILVERDALE — The Roughriders lost a close match against the fellow Olympic League contending Eagles.
“I knew this was going to be a close match that came down to a few points, and that’s exactly what happened,” Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen said.
“Klahowya has some really experienced players and that put them over the top.”
The Riders lost all three singles matches and the No. 1 doubles match, but kept the contest close by taking the other three doubles matches.
Daniel Manwell and Hayden Kays and Erdmann of Port Angeles defeated Forrest Brockett and Ryan Davis 6-3, 6-0.
In the No. 3 doubles match Tanner Gochnour and Janson Pederson beat Connor Roberts and Tim Larson 6-1, 6-2.
Matt Hendry and Connor Heilman won the No. 4 doubles match over Florian Glatzer and Cameron Dammeyer 6-4, 6-0.
Gundersen picked Heilman and Hendry as the players of the match.
“Connor and Matt have been very solid for us this season,” Gunderson said.
