Anacortes tournament
The Rangers faced much larger schools at the Anacortes tournament last Saturday.
“We played some hard teams that revealed areas we need to improve upon, including facing heavy hitters and getting in defensive position,” Crowell said.
“We are focusing on our defense at the mid-season to tighten that up. Our communication is continuing to improve.”
Quilcene fell to 2B La Conner 11-25, 18-25. They lost to 3A Marysville-Pilchuck 9-25, 10-25 and split with 1A Overlake 23-25, 25-19 to end up in the tourney’s bronze bracket.

“I was able to play everybody, but we had some errors in that third game,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.

Girls Soccer
Port Angeles 2, Bremerton 1
BREMERTON — The Roughriders turned the tables on the Knights, getting some revenge for two close losses last season that knocked them out of the postseason.
“We lost 2-1 and 1-0 last year, and it was nice to put that behind us tonight,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
The Riders jumped ahead when sophomore Leah Haworth curled in a 20-yard shot from a Taylar Clark assist.
“I was just thinking, ‘That shot better hit back post,’” Haworth said.
After a Bremerton handball in the penalty box, Taylar Clark converted her second penalty kick in as many games.
“A few girls asked me to take it, so I did,” said Clark.
She calmly converted and put Port Angeles up 2-0.
That lead held until a Riders handball led to Bremerton’s only goal.
Moseley said a key factor in the win was the play of the four freshmen on the team.
“We had four girls step up and they all played critical roles in getting and keeping the lead — Shanzi Cosgrove and Lexie Jeffers on defense, plus Emily Boyd and CC Robinson at forward,” Moseley said.
“It’s pretty unusual to have four young players out there but they played great.”
Zoe Owens had 11 saves for Port Angeles, while the Riders offense recorded 12 shots on goal and 19 overall.
Moseley named Haworth and Clark offensive players of the game; Allie Burwell as the team’s top defensive player and Maddie Boe the top transition player.
Port Angeles (2-1, 4-1) hosts Olympic (2-1, 4-1) tonight.

Bainbridge 118, Port Angeles 68
BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders dropped their first dual meet of the season on the road against a tough 3A Spartans team.
“[Our] athletes took advantage of the opportunity to compete against a 3A school and recorded many season-best times,” Port Angeles coach Rich Butler said.
“Despite their efforts, [we] didn’t have the depth to compete with Bainbridge and will use this loss as a stepping stone to better prepare themselves for postseason action.”
Four Riders recorded new individual district qualifying times and Carter Juskevich swam her third state-qualifying time, winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 10.59 seconds.
Juskevich also won the 200 free in 2:02.49.
