PREP SPORTS: Quilcene boys basketball edges Clallam Bay 40-37; other area reports

QUILCENE — Quilcene overcame foul trouble and a pesky Clallam Bay team for a 40-37 nonleague boys basketball victory.

“We opened up a nine-point lead to start, then our point guard Triston Williams got in foul trouble so Brandon Bessey and A.J. Prater did a great job of stemming the tide and helping the team keep it’s composure,” Rangers coach Mark Thompson said of Tuesday’s game.

The two teams were tied at 21-all at halftime, but Quilcene pushed past with a 15-8 third quarter.

“We came out in the press after halftime and hit for six points in the first 20 seconds,” Thompson said.

“Clallam Bay had a hard time adjusting to it, but Triston picked up more fouls as well so there was a trade off with him fouling out with five minutes to go in the third quarter.”

In his limited duty, Williams still managed 14 points to lead the Rangers.

Clallam Bay’s Sam Signor had 15 to lead all scorers.

The Bruins wouldn’t go away in the fourth quarter, even taking a one-point lead with just over two minutes to play.

“Prater made a huge steal and Jarod Smith made a big bucket to put us back up by one, and we hit free throws from there to close it out,” Thompson said.

“We hurt them on the boards. That’s our emphasis and what we focus on, and the kids did a great job.”

Aberdeen 91, Forks 66

FORKS — A basketball game turned into a track meet with the press-happy Bobcats pulling away from the Spartans for a 91-66 Evergreen League win.

“I was actually pretty pleased with our performance,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said after Tuesday’s game.

“It was 52-43 [Aberdeen] at halftime, so it was still a ballgame.”

Aberdeen heavily traps and presses on defense, and Gooding was happy with how his team handled the pressure.

“We did great job with our press breaker,” Gooding said of getting the ball away from the traps in the backcourt.

“Aberdeen is known for it, and I think in the second half we kind of ran out of gas a little bit.

“Aberdeen has 10 guys they throw in there, and we have a shorter rotation, so we played a lot of guys who haven’t seen much time and they did good job doing what we asked in an intense game, a fun game going up and down the court.”

The Spartans couldn’t stop Addam Follett, who put up 31 points for the Bobcats.

“He was their best player, a shooting guard, and pretty consistent,” Gooding said.

“He scored seven in the first quarter, seven in the second, nine in the third and eight in the fourth, so he consistently kicked our butt.”

Colton Raben led Forks with 23 points, Parker Browning had 13, Jeffrey Schumack scored nine and Keishaun Ramsey added eight.

“Offensively, 66 [points] is pretty good for us, but defensively, lots of things to work on,” Gooding said.

Forks (0-3, 1-4) will look for its first league win Friday when it visits Tenino (0-3, 2-5).

Girls Basketball

FORKS — The Bobcats blanked the Spartans in the opening quarter, rolling to a 22-0 advantage after one period.

“Allowing three straight 3-pointers within the first minute by Makeena Roiko was not the way we wanted to start,” Forks coach Al Scheibner said of Tuesday’s game.

“It was 9-0 at that point. Unfortunately, it would be the second quarter before we scored. We struggled with their pressure and allowed easy transition baskets.”

Forks had trouble getting in the right spots on defense in the second quarter, leading to multiple fouls and 10 made free throws for Aberdeen.

“We came out from halftime and played a better third quarter,” Scheibner said.

“But after digging ourselves such a huge hole in the first half, we were unable to mount any type of comeback.

“We are pretty young [with two freshman starters] and still make those types of freshmen mistakes.”

Forks (0-3, 2-3) will visit Tenino (1-2, 1-5) on Friday.
