PORT ANGELES — Port Townsend got the better of Port Angeles 3-2 in closely-fought Olympic League girls volleyball match.
The Redhawks overcame a slow start to prevail 13-25, 25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 17-15 Tuesday night.
“This victory against PA is what we needed going into league play next week,” said Port Townsend coach Nettie Hawkins.
Abby McGuire led the way for the Redhawks with 13 digs, 11 assists, five kills and three aces.
Rio Golden had eight kills, seven digs and three aces, Megan Juran had four kills and 10 digs, and Avery Selisch totaled three kills and four digs.
Megan Lee had a team-high 35 digs and two kills for Port Townsend.
“It was a tough match to lose,” Roughriders coach Christine Halberg said.
“We started out strong and in control. We struggled after game one with ball control.
“They fought back hard and did a good job of fighting off their inner battles.
Port Angeles senior Elizabeth DeFrang led the Riders in kills with seven. She also recorded 17 digs and two aces.
Alyssa Wetzler had three aces, three kills and 18 digs for the Riders.
Sophomore Nizhoni Wheeler had five kills, four aces and three digs and junior Emily Johnson led the team with 15 set assists, and added eight digs and two kills.
“There were some really close plays at the end that made the game even more exciting,” Halberg said.
“We just need to learn to trust ourselves.”
Port Angeles (1-5, 1-7) hosts North Mason today.
Port Townsend (4-2) will host Vashon in the Redhawks first home match of the season on Monday.
“After traveling game after game and feeling comfortable winning on the road, it sure will feel awesome to play in our newly remodeled gym,” Hawkins said.

QUILCENE — The Rangers were able to play the whole roster in a 25-10, 25-10, 25-9 sweep of the Kings on Tuesday.
“This game allowed the Lady Rangers to utilize our full bench and look at different players in different positions,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell said.
“Everyone played very well and the serving was outstanding in this game.
“Perfect Serving came from Bailey Kieffer, and Katie Bailey and Katie Love went 15 of 16 with nine aces.”
Senior outside hitter Samantha Rae served five of six with four aces and five kills.
Megan Weller was 8 of 11 on serve, with three aces, a kill and a dig.
Sophomore middle blocker Bailey Kieffer had four aces and two kills.
Last Thursday, Quilcene went on the road for a 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of Puget Sound Adventist Academy.
“The Lady Rangers played well with some outstanding hitting from Samantha Rae and Emily Hitt, as well as much better serve-receive,” Crowell said.
“Our serving also has improved steadily as the season goes by and we had four girls serving over the 90 percent mark. The teamwork is starting to consolidate and communication is improving greatly.”
Rae had nine kills, two digs and a block and Allison Jones had three kills, four digs and 19 assists.
Quilcene (6-1, 8-2) visits Shorewood Christian on Friday.

Sequim (5-1, 7-1) hosts Olympic (5-1, 5-4) today in a contest with sole possession of second place up for grabs.

FORKS — The Class 2A Bobcats upended the 1A Spartans 14-25, 23-25, 26-24, 11-25 in an Evergreen League game on Tuesday.
Forks won its first match of the season 3-2 against Eatonville last Thursday.
The Spartans (1-6, 1-7) host league-leading Montesano today.

BREMERTON — The Riders fell on the road to the Olympic League-leading Eagles.
Port Angeles gave up three goals in the first half of Tuesday’s match, but coach Scott Moseley said his team played with Klahowya through the middle portion of the game.
“We gave them a good battle for the middle 60 minutes of the game, but lost our focus over the last nine minutes, including [allowing] two in the last two minutes to give up three preventable goals,” Moseley said.
“We passed really well in the midfield but had continued issues in our attacking third.”
Moseley said the Eagles have a number of players that will play college soccer, including 2013 Olympic League MVP McKenzie Cook, who will play at Grand Canyon University, and Izzy Severns, a Central Washington commit.
Klahowya had 15 shots on goal while Port Angeles had four shots.
Goalkeeper Zoe Owens had nine saves for the Riders.
Port Angeles (2-3, 4-4) hosts North Mason (3-2, 4-3-1) tonight at Civic Field.

HOQUIAM — The Grizzlies blanked the Spartans on Tuesday night at Olympic Stadium.
“We are half way through the season and the girls are showing some improvement,” Forks coach Joe Morton said.
