QUILCENE — Port Townsend came from behind to defeat Quilcene in five sets in the volleyball season opener for both teams.
After dropping the first two sets, the Redhawks rallied to take three straight and win 23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17, 15-12.
“Playing Port Townsend’s volleyball team was a great season opener,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell
“[Our] level of play this game was improved from our first game last year.
“We are looking forward to an exciting season and want to thank the Quilcene community for coming out to support us.”
Rangers senior outside hitter Sammy Rae was 10 for 13 serving with 14 kills, six digs and one block.
“Samantha Rae dominated at the net, with 14 kills and a strong presence in the serve receive,” Crowell said.
“Allison Jones set very well and focused on hitting all her options. Katie Bailey and Megan Weller provided solid serve-receive skills and hit well.
“Alex Johnsen led in serving with 10 of 11, dug seven hard Port Townsend hits.
“Freshmen Emily Hitt and Katie Love added some power at the net, with Katie Love making some key blocks and tips.”
Jones had 27 assists and 10 digs from the setter position.
Weller served 10 for 13 with an ace to go along with seven kills and 15 digs.
Bailey had three kills and 10 digs and served 12 of 14.
Johnsen, the Rangers’ defensive specialist, had an ace on 10 of 11 serving with seven digs.
Hitt served 11 of 15 with three aces and had five kills and nine digs, while Love had four kills and two blocks.
“There were some moments when our team really came together and played quality volleyball,” Crowell said.
“Port Townsend did expose some areas that we will be addressing prior to league, which is very beneficial to our team and program.”
The Rangers host Mount Rainier Lutheran on Tuesday.
The Redhawks also are in action Tuesday with a road match against Sequim.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders opened Olympic League play with a close win against the Vikings.
“Although all gave great effort, Janson Pederson, Elliott Soelter, Ben Basden and the doubles team of Nick Fritschler and Kody Kuch, won the match for [us],” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said following Wednesday’s match.
Stockton said the match ball was awarded to Elliott Soelter “for his focus and unwavering determination in a third set that both men fought hard for.”
Port Angeles (1-0, 2-0) will visit Klahowya on Tuesday.
