PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend girls soccer team produced its finest performance of the season in a 4-4 tie with Bremerton at Memorial Field.
“That’s the best game we’ve played,” Redhawks coach Ahmad Baabahar said of Thursday’s contest.
“Possession-wise, controlling the midfield, linking from the back all the way up, we were solid.”
Port Townsend went up 2-0 early on a goal by sophomore Kaitlyn Meek in the first 10 minutes and a penalty kick by senior captain McKenzie Ginther in the 14th minute.
“Kaitlyn scored on a breakaway where she pushed the ball and was able to get past the defenders and slotted it in the corner. It was a really good goal,” Baahabar said.
“And McKenzie slotted the penalty home after they pulled our striker down.”
Bremerton put two across just before halftime to tie the game at 2-all at the break.
But the Redhawks pushed ahead again on a goal from Mikayla Hemsley off free kick that was assisted by Eileen Leoso in the 43rd minute, and another goal by Meek in the 49th minute.
“They performed the free kick just like they’ve been practicing,” Baahabar said.
“That was really good to see.”
Bremerton tied the game with goals in the 53rd and 68th minutes.
“Anytime you go up two goals you should win,” Baahabar said.
“But we are a young team and have to figure out how to close a win out.”
Baahabar liked the performances of many of his players.
“Kaitlyn and McKenzie were standouts for us, and one of our freshman midfielders Eileen Leoso played really well,” he said.
Baahabar also praised his backup goalkeepers, playing in place of an injured Shenoa Snyder.
“Our freshman keepers played really well,” Baahabar said.
“Karlee Kellogg stopped a lot of free kicks in the second half, and Jazzy Apker did a good job in goal in the first half.”
Port Townsend (0-2-1) hosts North Mason (1-1-0) on Tuesday.
Port Angeles 7, Chimacum 1
CHIMACUM — Six Roughriders scored goals as a balanced offensive attack rolled over the Cowboys.
Three other Port Angeles players added assists.
“This team has the most balanced scoring of any that I have coached,” said Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley.
“You can’t key in on one player because there are six more that can finish well.”
The Riders struck early when Sierra Robinson scored off a Taylar Clark cross in the second minute.
Following a Chimacum own goal, Maddie Boe headed in a corner kick from Madison St. George.
St. George earned her second assist in the 37th minute when she sent in another corner kick that Mia DelGuzzi finished.
Chimacum pulled back a goal six minutes into the second half after a foul. Grace Johnson crushed the 20-yard free kick past the Port Angeles wall.
The Riders scored a scant three minutes later when Clark assisted Nicole Heaton.
Shanzi Cosgrove hit a 25-yard shot over the keeper for her fifth goal of the year, with DelGuzzi assisting.
“Emily Boyd rounded out the scoring with a strong individual effort, dribbling the ball 30 yards, then calmly placing her fourth goal of the season in the net,” Moseley said.
Port Angeles (3-0) hosts North Kitsap (3-0) in its Olympic League opener Tuesday.
Chimacum (0-4) visits Bellevue Christian on Tuesday.

Bremerton 3, Port Angeles 1
BREMERTON — The Roughriders fell 25-16, 19-25, 25-15, 25-12 to the Knights on the road.
“We didn’t play with as much energy as we did Tuesday, so we struggled gaining momentum and we weren’t as consistent offensively,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said of Thursday’s match.
“The set we won, we turned on the switch and it made a big difference.
“We just didn’t maintain it for the rest of the match.”
Kiana Robideau led the Riders with seven kills, 22 digs and six blocks.
Genna Orr added three kills, four digs and two blocks, and Brennan Gray contributed 15 digs, one kill and Port Angeles’ lone service ace.
The Riders (1-1, 1-2) host North Kitsap (1-0, 1-1) on Tuesday.
Quilcene 3, Chimacum 0
CHIMACUM — The Rangers swept their Jefferson County counterparts 25-19, 25-12 and 28-26 in a nonleague match.
“Chimacum played very well and really challenged our team in the third game,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell said.
“[We] stayed focused, and excellent serving in the third game made the difference.
“Elysah Schryver and Megan Weller were very strong at the net with six and nine kills [apiece].”
Schryver was one of five Rangers with perfect service games, connecting on all 15 attempts.
She added eight digs and four blocks.
Alex Johnson was 11 of 11 on serve and had two aces and seven digs.
Katie Bailey went 10 of 10 on serves with an ace and five kills.
Setter Allison Jones totaled 25 assists, three kills, three digs and was 8 of 9 on serve with an ace.
Freshman Pearl Munn was 4 for 4 serving with a kill and a dig.

AUBURN — The Rangers opened SeaTac League play with a 25-12, 25-13, 25-11 sweep of the Mustangs at Green River Community College.
“They played with intensity and the level of teamwork was impressive,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell said.
“Alex Johnsen was tough as our libero and had excellent serve-receive, really keeping us in system and allowing our setter, Allison Jones, to keep the tempo of the game high.
“Elysah Schryver was very strong at the net with five blocks.”
Schryver added four kills, three aces, three digs and an assist.
Emily Hitt recorded five kills, four aces and a dig.
Katie Bailey was 15 of 16 on serve with two aces, three digs and a kill.
Megan Weller was 10 of 13 serving with two aces, four kills and a dig.
“Our coverage in both offense and defense is improving in game play, which is an area that we have been putting a lot of focus on,” Crowell said.
Quilcene (1-0, 4-0) hosts Seattle Lutheran (0-1, 1-2) on Tuesday.
