PREP SPORTS: Port Townsend girls soccer edges Chimacum 2-1 in extra time; Redhawks take rivalry volleyball match

CHIMACUM — The Port Townsend girls soccer picked up its first Olympic League victory on the season and earned revenge for an earlier loss to rival Chimacum with a 2-1 extra time win over the Cowboys.

Shenoa Snyder scored the winner for the Redhawks in Monday’s match.

“Port Townsend finished this exciting game in the second minute of extra time with a lovely goal from Shenoa Snyder after yet another powerful run from Kaitlyn Meek,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.

“It was a very deserved win with Port Townsend applying all the pressure but with few rewards.”

Chimacum junior Melanie Pieper opened the scoring, with a goal in the 12th minute of the match after what Foden described as “some dithering in the Port Townsend defense.”

The Cowboys’ lone senior, Alisha Leoso, was honored before the senior night match.

“Both sides brought enthusiasm to the match,” Chimacum assistant Kevin Racine said.

“Chimacum’s student body cheered the match before continuing their enthusiasm to the volleyball game, also versus Port Townsend.”

The Redhawks evened the score in the final minute of the first half when Tyler Iseke-Wade fired home a penalty kick.

Foden described the run of play in the second half as being “all Port Townsend,” but the score remained the same until Snyder’s strike.

“Seniors Tyler Iseke-Wade and Laura Garcia were magnificent today, completely dominating the midfield,” Foden said.

“When freshman Kaitlyn Meek masters the art of finishing she will be an incredible player.

“Her speed and power are top class. Terrific support play from everyone on the team – Port Townsend looked really good in this game.”

Port Townsend (1-3-0, 2-10-0) visits Coupeville Thursday.

Chimacum (1-4, 2-11-0) wrapped the regular season with a game at Klahowya on Tuesday.

The two teams are competing for the Olympic League’s third seed to the West Central District Tournament and a matchup

CHIMACUM — The Redhawks outlasted the Cowboys in Monday’s rivalry contest.

“Monday night we played Lady Redhawks volleyball,” Port Townsend coach Nettie Hawkins said.

“The girls went in confident in themselves and each other and played every point like it was game point.

“I think by the time we left their gym last night, everyone including fans felt a great deal of positive energy and enjoyed watching a great game.”

Abby McGuire led the Redhawks with 10 kills, 17 assists and 18 digs.

Addi Richert had nine digs, five kills, two aces and a block for Port Townsend, while teammate Rio Golden had five kills and three digs.

Libero Megan Lee had 41 digs and two aces for the Redhawks and Avery Selisch had 18 digs, four kills and two aces.

Megan Juran had 10 digs, four aces and three kills in the win for Port Townsend.

Chimacum coach Samantha Archambault saw some solid performances from her players but was upset by the team’s serving troubles.

“I’m disappointed with our serving, we missed 14 serves in that game,” Archambault said.

“Typically we are a 90 percent service team and the girls know missed serves are my pet peeve because it gives the other team a point without having to do anything.”

She praised the play of libero Alyssa Hamilton after Hamilton finished the match with 46 digs and kills from her spot in the back row.

“I’ve never seen Alyssa Hamiliton play better,” Archambault said.

“Alina Preston also, she really stepped up and hit better than I’ve ever seen her hit and played great defense in the front row.”

Kiersten Synder had nine kills from her spot as outside hitter for Chimacum.

“Our defense stepped up, PT’s hitters in this game were hitting much more forcefully than in our first match,” Archambault said of her back row of Hamilton, Shanya Misdet and Ryley Eldridge.

Chimacum (2-3, 4-8) wrapped its regular season with a senior night match with Klahowya on Tuesday.

Port Townsend (1-3, 7-5) hosted Coupeville (1-3, 1-9) Tuesday and will host the Wolves again on Thursday.

Two Redhawks’ wins would give Port Townsend the No. 2 Olympic League seed to districts.

A split would likely create a three-way tie between the Cowboys, Redhawks and Wolves.

Two losses would give Coupeville the No. 2 seed, and Chimacum would likely take the No. 3 seed.

The first round of district play is set Thursday, Nov. 6.
