FORKS — Port Angeles placed third at a tougher-than-usual Forks Invite.
The shorthanded Roughriders came in behind Class 4A Battle Ground and perennial Class 1A power Warden at Saturday’s meet.
Port Angeles had five finalists and two champions, to go along with nine top-four finishes.
Evan Gallacci placed first in the 195-pound competition for Port Angeles and Kyle La Fritz won the heavyweight division.
Tyler Gale (113 pounds), Brady Anderson (126) and Ricky Crawford (152) all placed second for the Riders, while Ben Basden (120, Morgan Mower (126), Gavin Crain (132) and Brandyn Fouts (160) each finished fourth.
“All in all, it was a great first tournament, especially for some of the younger kids who gained some valuable varsity experience,” Port Angeles coach Erik Gonzalez said.
The Riders next travel to Kingston on Wednesday for an Olympic League dual meet.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders were undone by long shots that came too early in their offensive possessions.
Port Angeles made 10 of 24 shots from two-point range and got to the free-throw line 22 times, making 14, by attacking the hoops.
“While those numbers aren’t great, they were enough to win a game in which we again played good defense,” Riders coach Michael Poindexter said of Saturday’s game.
“However, we were 0 for 16 from 3-point territory, too many of those shots coming early in our possessions.
“Our coaching focus this week will be to do a better job of getting players to see the impact of early outside misses, as opposed to trusting their offense to get them inside scoring opportunities.”
The Trojans, coached by Port Angeles graduate Matt Sinnes, flipped the game with a hot-shooting fourth quarter in which they made 75 percent of their field goals, while the Riders only made 22 percent of their shots.
Fife (3-0) out-rebounded Port Angeles 27-21, but the Riders forced more turnovers, 23, than the Trojans, 16.
“Our effort on defense continues to exceed our expectations for early season play, but we have much work to do on offense: court vision, decision making and passing execution continue to be needed areas of improvement,” Poindexter said.
Sophomore Nizhoni Wheeler led Port Angeles with 11 points, while freshman Natalie Steinman added six and Hayley Baxley scored five.
Maddie Boe had six assists and five steals, both team-highs, for the Riders. Emily Johnson contributed four points and three steals.
Port Angeles (1-2) plays at Vashon today.

Crescent falls to Oakville, Taholah
JOYCE — The young Loggers are still finding their way after falling to Taholah 74-28 on Friday and Oakville 63-23 on Saturday.
“The boys had a rough couple of games this week. They played hard and never gave up,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said.
“We had to many turnovers, which didn’t help us any, and we need to do a better job on the boards.
“We have a young team, and once they settle down and come together I expected they will become a team to be reckoned with.”
Martin Waldrip led the Loggers in scoring against Taholah with eight points, while Luke Leonard contributed six.
KC Spencer led Crescent with 10 points in the loss to Oakville. Waldrip added five and Zach Fletcher and Wyatt McNeese scored four each.
