SPOKANE VALLEY — The Port Angeles and Forks wrestling teams each made the long haul across the state to the Dream Duals at East Valley High School on Saturday, where the Roughriders earned second in the Class 2A division and Forks finished third in the 1A ranks.
Port Angeles went 2-1 overall in the event, smashing Quincy 57-15 in the opening round and blasting top-ranked Sedro-Woolley 61-12 in the semifinals.
In the finals, however, the Riders dropped their first match of the season 42-30 to host East Valley.
“Unfortunately [we] were unable to dethrone the Knights, who have been Dream Duals champions for at least the past four years, and fell in a tight battle that came down to the final two matches,” Port Angeles coach Erik Gonzalez said.
Undefeated wrestlers with 3-0 match records on the day for the Riders included Tyler Gale at 106 pounds, Matt Robbins in the 182-pound class, Kyle La Fritz at 220 pounds and Roberto Coronel in the 285-pound division.
Port Angeles (7-0, 12-1) can wrap its third Olympic League title in four years with a senior night victory at home against North Kitsap at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Forks starts slow
The Evergreen-League champion Spartans went into the Dream Duals shorthanded, without the injured Dimitri Sampson (195 pounds) and Jack Dahlgren at 182 pounds.
Forks sputtered in their first match, losing 41-33 to Chelan to open the tournament.
“Many of our wrestlers were flat and just didn’t come out ready to wrestle,” Spartans coach Bob Wheeler said.
“I was disappointed with the start to the day, but I hope it was a learning experience that will go with them to the state tournament.
“Everyone must be ready for the first match of the day.”
Forks rebounded to win its final three matches: 42-28 over Lakeside, 49-27 against Zillah and a 38-36 triumph over Granger.
“The rest of the day they wrestled more like the team that they should be,” Wheeler said.
Miguel Morales pinned all four of his opponents, the only Spartan wrestler to win four contested matches on the day.
Reece Moody went 4-0 in his 160-pound matches, with two wins by pin, a major-decision victory and a win by forfeit.
Javier Contreras finished with a 3-1 record, with two pins and an 8-2 victory at 145 pounds.
Perennial state power Freeman won the event and Chelan was second.
Forks now sets its sights on the postseason, with the Evergreen League subregionals at Elma High School on Saturday, Feb. 7.

AUBURN — The Kings upended the visiting Rangers in SeaTac League play.
“Turnovers, poor defensive effort and foul trouble all contributed to the outcome,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said of Friday’s game.
Sammy Rae, the Rangers’ senior center, picked up her fourth foul in the second quarter and was forced to sit until the fourth quarter.
“I am not one to usually complain about the refs, but they made it a mission to limit her time on the court and get her out of the game,” Weller said.
“Not having her on the floor hurt us severely in the rebounding and defensive departments.”
Muckleshoot made their run in the second quarter, outscoring the Rangers 22-9.
Megan Weller scored 20 points and had four assists for Quilcene (2-4, 10-6).
Allison Jones added 10 points and a pair of steals, Rae had eight points and nine rebounds, and Katie Love was active with four points, 13 rebounds and five assists.
“The girls really have to work hard and play consistently here these next couple of weeks in order to have a shot at postseason play,” Weller said.
“One of our goals for the year was to finish the season in the top six in the SeaTac League standings and earn postseason games.
“The girls still have a shot at this but need to play at their best over the course of the next few weeks.”
Quilcene hosts Shorewood Christian on Tuesday.
