PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ top two singles players forced decisive third sets in their home opener against North Kitsap, but the Vikings’ depth and skill swept past the Roughriders in a 7-0 defeat.
“We knew that North was going to be tough. They have a ton of experience and don’t beat themselves,” said coach Brian Gundersen. “This was a great learning experience for our guys, and we have a good idea of what to work on.”
Port Angeles (2-2) travels to Kingston today.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Rivals picked up their second straight shutout with a Nisqually League victory over the Cougars at Memorial Field.
“We executed a good game plan, controlled the ball and were really aggressive in slowing the other team down and not allowing them to get in any rhythm,” coach Rob Cantley said.
The Rivals held a 2-0 lead at halftime.
“Kaylen Pray scored the opener, a long-range effort from the right side, a long-looping shot over the keeper into the corner at about 10 minutes,” Cantley said.
“About five minutes before halftime Clare Johnson hit a first-time volley off a corner kick sent in by Ava Shiflett. It was a really quality score.”
Johnson managed to return the favor a few minutes into the second half.
“Clare sent a really cleverly disguised pass to split the defense and Ava ran on and scored it,” Cantley said.
Johnson added her second goal of the game five minutes later off an assist by Kay Watkins.
Cantley also praised some players who didn’t score but had an impact on the game.
“Iris Mattern in the midfield, she was doing well to control the tempo of the game and linking plays between defense and offense and switching the field up,” Cantley said. “Izzy McCracken was holding things down along the back line.”
Goalkeeper Savanna Hoffman had three saves to earn the shutout.
East Jefferson (1-2, 2-2) visits Vashon tonight.
