PREP SPORTS: Port Angeles gymnasts win last regular season meet; Forks wrestlers pin down Port Angeles on Senior Night

POULSBO — Port Angeles edged Kingston 140.05 to 137.35 in girls gymnastics Tuesday at Breidablik Elementary in the final tuneup before the postseason.

The Roughriders’ Cassandra Middlestead turned in the best all-around performance for Port Angeles, finishing second with 31.65 overall points. Middlestead was second on the beam (8.2) and bars (7.1) and third in the floor excercise (8.25) and vault (8.1).

Cassidy Tamburro was fourth overall (28.9) after recording a fourth-place finish on the bars (5.55), two fifth-places on the beam (7.7) and the floor exercise (8.05) and coming in sixth on the vault (7.6).

Sequim freshman Emma Sharp second in the vault (8.3) and the floor exercise (8.55), and third on the beam (7.85) in finishing fifth in the all-around (28.2).

Sequim’s Lesae Pfefer was sixth overall with 27.6 points in the all around. She placed fourth on the beam (7.8), fifth on the vault (7.65) and sixth on the floor (7.9).

Port Angeles’ Maizie Tucker finished fourth in the vault (7.7) and Julienne Jacobs was fifth on the bars (5.5).

Port Angeles and Sequim gymnasts will compete at the Class 2A/3A Olympic/Pierce County League/South Sound Conference Subregional at Washington Academy of Gymnastics in Fife on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Two teams, eight individuals in each event and two All Around competitors will advance to the West Central District meet.

Wrestling Forks 54, Port Angeles 18

FORKS — The Spartans wrapped the dual-meet portion of their season with a Senior Night victory over the Roughriders on Tuesday.

“This was our last dual match of the season,” Forks coach Bob Wheeler said.

“Port Angeles helped us out by giving us our only home wrestling match this year. This allowed us to have our senior night in front of our home crowd. We honored Marissa Bailey, Marbella Ramirez, Nate Flores and Thomas Jackson and Keith Kullander.”

The Spartans went 7-3 in contested matches against Port Angeles and also picked up four wins by forfeit.

Forks had three winners by pin: Shane Queen pinned Corey Danielson at 4:46 in their 182-pound match. At 195, Eden Cisneros pinned Jaymisen Morrison at 1:09 and Colton Duncan pinned Nate Harrelson at 4:51.

The Spartans’ Colby Demorest edged Riley Gale 4-0 at 160, Ricky Barragan defeated Jackson Larson 11-6 at 152, Ariel Morales earned an 8-2 decision over Daniel Basden and Andres Santos-Delacruz won 7-3 against Adam Borde.

Port Angeles’ Carson Jackson earned a first-round pin against Tyler Ellis at 1:39 and Grant Abrams pinned Kullander at 1:56.

Forks took four of five girls matches.

Bailey pinned Emily Light at 1:46 of their 110-pound match. Ramirez (145) pinned Emma Ahmann at 1:08. Karen Ensastegui-Salazar won a 13-11 decision at 100 over Samantha Rueda, Annhelica Wells won 4-2 against Claire Tyson (105).

Shayla Smith earned the Riders’ lone girls win, an 8-7 decision over Benna King at 140.

“We ended the season 4-0 in league with our 6th straight [Evergreen] League championship, and we ended our overall dual meet season 13-1,” Wheeler said.

The Forks boys will begin the postseason at the Evergreen League Subregional at The HUB in Centralia on Feb. 3.
