BREMERTON — With pouring rain and standing water on Bremerton’s field, Port Angeles fell a goal short in a critical Olympic League girls soccer matchup.
The Roughriders and Knights came into the game tied for fifth place in the league standings, and the game was as tightly contested as expected.
Bremerton took the lead in the 15th minute, but Port Angeles controlled the ball more.
The Riders struggled to execute the crucial final passes due to the wind and large puddles on the field, and were down 1-0 at half.
Port Angeles continued with a great deal of control in the midfield and their efforts eventually led to a series of corner kicks.
In the 63rd minute, sophomore Madison St. George took a left-footed corner kick and was able to place it just inside the near post to even the score.
It was St. George’s first varsity goal and appeared to give the Riders extra momentum.
Both teams had their chances as the clock wound down, with Port Angeles goalkeeper Hayley Baxley tipping a shot by Bremerton’s Alyssa Beach just over the bar with two minutes left.
However, on the ensuing corner, Bremerton (3-5) was able to blast a 25-yard shot past the Riders defense for the winning goal.
“It was incredibly disappointing for all of us,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said of Saturday’s game.
“We worked so hard to come back, and it looked like we were going to [overtime].
“It just seemed like one of those days where the ball just doesn’t drop right for your team.”
Moseley named St. George as offensive player of the game, Maddie Boe as transition player of the game and Karina Bohman and Baxley as defensive players of the game.
The Riders (2-6) host Olympic (5-2) at Civic Field on Tuesday night.
The Port Angeles JV team won 4-1 Saturday, with Madelyn Owen scoring all four goals.
Kingston 5, Port Townsend 0
PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins stayed with the Buccaneers in the first half, but succumbed to injuries in the second half.
Kingston scored a pair of late goals to create the lopsided final on Saturday.
“As always, there were positive performances from every player, with outstanding games from Becca Stewart, McKenzie Ginther and Malia Henderson,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.
“[Our] team is a team, remains positive, improves each game, continues to work hard and shows great sportsmanship on and off the field.”
The Redskins (0-7) play at Bremerton (3-5) on Tuesday.

Montesano 3, Forks 0
FORKS — The Bulldogs routed the Spartans in three sets in SWL-Evergreen Division action.
Montesano won the match with scores of 25-15, 25-20, 25-10.
Forks next plays at Neah Bay on Tuesday.
