PREP SPORTS: Port Angeles girls soccer blanks North Mason 4-0; other area reports

PORT ANGELES — Freshman Emily Boyd is on a goal-scoring tear.

Boyd followed up a two-goal performance Tuesday night with another pair of scores as the Port Angeles girls soccer team blanked North Mason 4-0 in an Olympic League seeding game.

With the win, the Roughriders (9-7) advanced to take on Olympic on Saturday at Silverdale Stadium.

The winner of that game faces regular-season champion North Kitsap on Tuesday for the top seed into the Class 2A West Central District tournament.

“[We] fell in OT just 48 hours prior and were looking for revenge and the potential of a higher seed going into district play,” Roughriders coach Scott Moseley said after Thursday’s win over North Mason.

“Home-field advantage lived up to its reputation as the Riders jumped all over North Mason from the outset.”

Emma Smith struck first for Port Angeles, taking a Taylar Clark cross and shooting left-footed past the Bulldogs’ goalkeeper.

Smith then volleyed a cross to Boyd, whose own one-time volley found the left side of the net.

“That was an amazing goal. It takes a lot of concentration to hit that shot and Emily made it look easy,” Moseley said.

The second half played out much like the first half, with Boyd scoring at the 45th minute on an assist from Emma Moseley. It was Boyd’s sixth goal of the season.

In the midst of a stellar two-game run, Boyd focused on the team as the reason for her success.

“It was a team effort; I couldn’t have scored without the passes and good defense of the team,” Boyd said.

The last goal game in the 74th minute when Clark converted her fifth penalty kick of the year after a foul on freshman Sierra Robinson inside the penalty box.

The Riders were able to keep North Mason’s top goal threat, Tegan Daviscourt, in check all night with tight defense from Elyse Lovgren, whom Moseley tabbed as the defensive player of the game.

“Elyse stepped it up tonight and shut Tegan down,” said Moseley.

Moseley also cited the entire defensive line as deserving credit for their fifth shutout of the season.

Port Angeles’ nine wins is the highest number in the past 14 years and tied for third-most wins the past 28 years, according to Moseley.

Coupeville 3, Port Townsend 0

PORT TOWNSEND — The shorthanded Redhawks played the entire game down a player and fell at home 3-0 to the Wolves.

With the loss, Port Townsend (2-4, 3-11-0) is the Olympic League 1A Division’s third seed and will face Nisqually League No. 2 Bellevue Christian in a West Central District loser-out match at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland.

Crescent 3, Clallam Bay 1

JOYCE — The Loggers closed out the regular season with a home win over the Bruins 23-25, 28-26, 25-15, 25-11.

Now Crescent moves on to a Tri-District play-in at Crosspoint Academy this Thursday. The winner advances to district and the loser is eliminated.

The Class 1B Tri-District tournament will be played at Crescent High School this Saturday.

After a first set loss and a close second set, the Loggers’ defense and serving took over to win the North Olympic League match.

“We definitely started slow, it definitely was a challenge in the first two sets,” Crescent coach Alex Baker said following Thursday’s game.

Senior Shannon Williams was 22 for 22 serving with eight aces, six stuff blocks, five deflections, three tips and nine kills.

“It was a great way for Shannon to finish in her last home match,” Baker said.

Another senior, Lauren Hartley, served 24 for 26 with three aces, four deflections, two tips and three kills.

Becca Bamer was 9 for 10 serving with a pair of aces.

Jade Blazek ahd 12 assists, four tips for points and three kills.

“Although she struggled at serving, she was 2 for 5, she set well and helped control the tempo,” Baker said.

The Loggers finish a tough regular season with a 3-3 league record and an 11-4 overall mark that includes a win in the Sequim tournament.

“In my 16 years of coaching, this was by far the toughest schedule,” Baker said.

With a win over Crosspoint, Crescent will advance to play District 1’s second seed Saturday morning.

Neah Bay in postseason

As the North Olympic League champions, Neah Bay already has clinched a spot at the Tri-District tournament.

The Red Devils have a first round bye before beginning play Saturday at noon.

Quilcene takes second at league tournament

AUBURN — The Rangers swept Auburn Adventist in three sets to advance to the SeaTac League tournament championship game.

In the title game, eighth-ranked Quilcene fell to third-ranked Christian Faith in three sets.

The Rangers will now host a Tri-District play-in game Tuesday against the fifth-place team from the District 1 tournament.
