UNIVERSITY PLACE — The Port Angeles girls basketball team fell to Sumner 46-29 in the 2A West Central District semifinals at Curtis High School.
After a tight first quarter that ended with the Roughriders trailing 9-6, the fifth-ranked Spartans took over in the second and led 22-12 at halftime.
That lead grew to as high as 19 before Port Angeles closed the third period on a 7-0 run that cut the deficit to 34-22 going into the fourth.
But the Spartans held the Riders to seven point in the fourth.
Krista Johnson led Port Angeles in scoring on Friday with eight points, while Maddy Hinrichs, Bailee Jones, Payton Lee and Nizhoni Wheeler added four apiece.
Anna Hurd topped Sumner with 17 points and Jamie Lange scored 14.
Port Angeles moved on to face Renton for the district’s No. 3 seed at Friday’s regionals. Both teams will move on to regionals.

Neah Bay 70, Muckleshoot 40
MOUNT VERNON — Cierra Moss scored 30 points to lead the fifth-ranked Red Devils to the 1B Tri-District championship game.
Moss has tallied 30 points in each of Neah Bay’s first two games of the tournament.
Much like their win 80-34 win over Tulalip on Tuesday, the Red Devils had a tight battle in the first half before pulling away in the second Thursday against the Kings at Mount Vernon Christian High School.
Faye Chartraw contributed 12 points, 18 rebounds and three blocks for Neah Bay, while eighth-grader Gina McCaulley scored 10 points and dished out three assists.
Olivia Ho led Muckleshoot with 19 points.
The Red Devils moved on to play host Mount Vernon Christian for the Tri-District championship.

King’s 66, Port Townsend 14
LYNNWOOD — The Redskins ran into the sixth-ranked Knights in the 1A Tri-District fourth-place game, but still have one more shot at securing a place at regionals.
King’s started the rout early, outscoring Port Townsend 21-2 in both the first and second quarters Thursday at Lynnwood High School.
Julia Berenson led all scorers with 13 points.
Jewel Johnson had seven points to pace the Redskins. Jayde Richardson added three points and Megan Lee and Rilke Rutenbeck scored two each.
Port Townsend moved on to face Eatonville for the Tri-District’s sixth and final regional berth.

MOUNT VERNON — The top-ranked Red Devils earned a shot at the 1B Tri-District championship with an 11-point win over Cedar Park Christian (Mountlake Terrace) on Thursday at Mount Vernon Christian High School.
Ryan Moss topped four Neah Bay players in double figures with 17 points. Ezekiel Greene added 13 points and Abraham Venske and Josiah Greene each scored 10.
Moss also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and Josiah Greene had 11.
Ezekiel Greene had seven of Neah Bay’s 18 steals. Venske had five and Moss swiped four.
The Red Devils advanced to play third-ranked Tulalip Heritage in the Tri-District championship game.

Port Angeles’ Macias advances to two finals
FEDERAL WAY — Port Angeles swimmer John Macias advanced to the finals in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke.
Macias, a junior, took second in the 200 individual medley with a time of two minutes and 2.15 seconds in Friday’s 2A state preliminaries at King County Aquatic Center.
He also placed fourth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.17 seconds.
Fellow Roughrider Jay Liang advanced to the finals in the 100 breaststroke after taking seventh in the prelims with a time of 1:05.97.
Colton Olson was the only Port Angeles diver to make it to the semifinals, where he placed 19th with a score of 158.50.
Sequim’s lone state qualifier, junior Eric Prosser, concluded his season with 20th-place finishes in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.
“Eric looked good in practice all week and his times were great. He also looked great in warmup today, but I think his nerves got the better of him,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said following Friday’s preliminaries.
“So, although he was perfectly capable of swimming great races today, he just didn’t.
“We were disappointed, but he still placed 20th in both events in 2A over the entire state and we are proud of that.
“He’ll do better next year, I’m sure of it.”
