PREP SPORTS: Port Angeles edges Sequim in boys golf; other area reports

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic League boys golf season is still in its infancy, but Port Angeles gained the inside track to a league title after edging Sequim 336 strokes to 339 in an 18-hole match at Peninsula Golf Club.

“We knew it was going to be a battle, and it was extremely exciting match that could have gone either way,” Roughriders coach Mark Mitrovich said of Wednesday’s contest.

“We were waiting for the last pairing to come in to get the final score.”

The Wolves’ Jack Shea earned medalist honors with a 3-over par 75.

“Jack really played well,” Mitrovich said.

“Sequim was solid. They came and played a practice round Tuesday, and they are always a quality opponent and extremely well coached.”

Travis Priest posted an 83 for the Wolves, while teammate Alex McCracken put up an 85.

Mason Jackson led Port Angeles with a round of 80.

“He was very steady for us with 13 pars,” Mitrovich said.

Alex Atwell and Alex Brown both carded rounds of 82 for the Riders.

They each finished with a birdie and seven pars on the day.

“Brown shot a 39 on the back nine and parred three of the last four holes to finish strong,” Mitrovich said.

“Jackson and Brown shared my man of the match honors. They showed outstanding leadership.”

Austin Peterson recorded a round of 92 for Port Angeles.

The Riders (2-0) are back in action Klahowya on Tuesday.

Sequim (1-1) hosts Chimacum on Tuesday.

SEQUIM — Austin Hilliard, Nigel Christian and James Grubb combined on a three-hit shutout as the Wolves topped the Coupeville Wolves.

Ian Dennis caught the shutout and was 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI double for Sequim in Wednesday’s game.

Gavin Velarde was 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored for the Wolves (2-0).

Sequim hosts Chimacum today.

CHIMACUM — The Cowboys allowed too many free passes in an Olympic League loss to the Vikings.

“[The] game tonight was a tough one,” Chimacum coach Andy Lingle said of Wednesday’s game.

“Fifteen walks, with a few costly errors, lead to an 18-2 loss.”

Quinn Dowling got on base three times for the Cowboys, walking twice and singling.

Logan Shaw was 1 for 2 with an RBI for Chimacum.

The Cowboys (0-2) visit Sequim today.

SEQUIM — The Wolves provided a harsh welcome to Olympic League newcomer Coupeville, as McKenzie Bentz and Olivia Kirsch combined on a two-hitter.

Kaylee Gumm led the Sequim (1-0) offense with three hits and three RBIs in Wednesday’s contest.

Allysen Montelius added three hits, and Mary Lu Clift had two RBIs.

The Wolves host Chimacum today.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders dropped their Olympic League opener to a tough Vikings squad.

“Our first league match was against one of the strongest teams in our league,” Port Angeles coach Stephanie Gochnour said of Wednesday’s match.

“We hope after our first match jitters, we can learn from our matches today and be ready to face them again later this season.

“I was proud our girls. We are a young team: 21 girls out of our roster of 34 players have only practiced for 12 days.”
