POULSBO — The Port Angeles boys tennis team went toe-to-toe with the first-place North Kitsap Vikings but came up short in a 4-3 defeat.
“It was a tough thing to watch as many players continued to make the same mistakes over and over,” Roughriders coach Gil Stockton said of Monday’s match.
Port Angeles’ No. 1 singles player Janson Pederson won his match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
“Janson Pederson not only won the team/match ball, but also played the best match of his season,” Stockton said.
“By mixing speeds, working the lines and maintaining razor concentration on fundamentals, Janson won his No. 1 singles match convincingly.
“All the things we have worked on all season were executed to perfection. It was great tennis to watch. “
The Riders’ No. 3 doubles team of Kody Kuch and Connor Heilman also won their match easily, 6-3, 6-2.
“These two fellows have grown dramatically and progress with each passing week,” Stockton said.

Cross Country

MARYSVILLE — Boys cross country teams from Port Angeles and Port Townsend and the Redhawks girls team competed at the eighth annual Twilight Invitational in Marysville.
The race, held Saturday at Cedarcrest Golf Course, is one of the largest high school cross country contests of the season, with 63 schools participating.
Port Townsend finished fifth in the 5-kilometer boys Class B-2A race, paced by Redhawks senior Ryan Clarke.
Clarke finished in ninth place, completing the course in a time of 16 minutes, 25.9 seconds.
Port Townsend sophomore Brennan LaBrie was 27th after finishing in 17:42, with the rest of the members of the Redhawks varsity all running under 19 minutes and placing in the top 60 of the 116-runner field.
The Riders’ boys team placed 13th, with Simon Shindler leading the way for Port Angeles in 14th-place with a time of 17:05.
Tristan Butler was the next-highest placing Riders runner, in 37th place after finishing in 18:13.8.
Port Townsend girls
Port Townsend senior Hanna Trailer’s finished 25th and freshman Ally Bradley was 32nd in 22:14 to help the Redhawks to ninth place in the 15 teamfinish in the 1B-2A race.
Port Townsend and Port Angeles will race at Sequim today.
