PORT ANGELES — Double event victories by John Macias, Tristin Butler and Jay Liang helped the Port Angeles boys swim team cruise to a 116-67 victory against North Kitsap.

“John Macias and Tristin Butler continued their collection of individual state qualifying times,” Roughriders coach Rich Butler said.

“John earned two more state times in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Tristin added one more with his swim in the 500 free. Four more district times were achieved by fellow teammates.”

Liang’s victories came in the 200 individual medley, where he earned a district qualifying time, and the 100 breaststroke.

Port Angeles won 10 of 12 contested events and outscored the Vikings in 10 of 12 events.

Butler added that the Riders head into winter break with six individual state qualifying times, all three relay teams have qualified for state and 21 individual swims qualified for the district meet.

Earning district qualifying times in Thursday’s meet were Milo Atwater with a win in the 100 backstroke, Kaleb Sheldon with a third-place finish in the 100 fly, and Nathan Bock, who was fifth in the 200 free.

Macias, Liang, Butler and Kody Kuch teamed to win the 200 medley relay, and Karsten Hertzog, Butler, Liang and Macias were winners in the 400 free relay.

Scott Methner also won the 1 meter dive event for Port Angeles with 186.95 points.

Crescent’s Patrick Singhose, who trains with the Roughriders but competes for the Loggers earned his second individual district qualifying time of the season in the 200 individual medley with a posted time of 2:28.39.

Port Angeles will next swim against Klahowya at Olympic High School on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Olympic 115, Sequim 50

BREMERTON — The Wolves’ Eric Prosser was the lone Sequim event winner, taking the 100 back and finishing second in the 100 butterfly.

“Eric Prosser dropped 2 seconds off his 100 fly time and swam nearly the time he achieved last year at the district meet that qualified him for state in the 100 back,” Wolves coach Linda Moats said.

“We’re hopeful that the trend of dropping 2 seconds off the time he swam last week in the backstroke will continue.”

Other highlights for Sequim included Wendall Lorenzen dropping 10 seconds off his best time in the 200 free and 14 seconds off his 100 free time and Andrew Hansted’s third-place finish in the 100 breast.

“Andrew Hansted had a great showing in his first outing in the 100 breastroke,” Moats said.

“He’s a natural. With training and hard work, he might be able to qualify for districts this year.”

Moats also liked the 400 free relay team’s result.

“Our 400 free relay posted their best time this season with solid swims for all legs and Eric Prosser cleaning up with a 55 second anchor leg,” Moats said.

SILVERDALE — The Riders took an 11-point lead in the second half but let the Eagles stay in the contest and even have a chance for a tying 3-point shot in the final seconds.

“We could never put them away,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said.

“Klahowya had a 3-point attempt at the buzzer but missed. We are still growing as a team, and when you let teams hang around and let them believe they can win, then you get into a game that can go either way.”

Ulin praised the performance of Hunter Hathaway and Noah McGoff.

“Hunter Hathaway was huge,” Ulin said. “Twelve points and 16 rebounds.

“Noah McGoff came off the bench and played very well with 11 points, six rebounds and some key plays in the second half.”

Port Angeles (1-1, 3-1) will play in the Decatur Holiday Tournament in Federal Way on Monday and Tuesday.

TENINO — The Spartans fell on the road in another competitive, but ultimately unsuccessful bid for their first Evergreen League victory.

“We went on a pretty good run to end the third quarter and were up three to enter the fourth,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.

“They [Tenino] canned two big 3-point shots, hit some free throws and we just didn’t convert. We didn’t run our offense and got sloppy.”

Colton Raben led the Spartans with 21 points, Parker Browning added 12 and Marky Adams had nine.

“We just have to find out how to win a game,” Gooding said.

“When we can find out how to do that we will improve a ton. One positive thing about us going 0 for 4 in league games is three of them have been competitive to the end and Aberdeen we were in it for a half.”

Forks (0-4, 1-5) will compete in the Holiday with the Hyaks Tournament at North Beach High School in Ocean Shores starting Friday.

Anacortes 42, Port Angeles 29

PORT ANGELES — Late-game letdowns by the Riders led to a nonleague loss at home against the Seahawks.

“The game was close until mid-way through the fourth quarter [when] Natalie Steinman hit a shot from the baseline to tie the game at 27,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said of Friday’s game.

“A combination of defensive breakdowns, two turnovers resulting in easy baskets for Anacortes, and good free-throw shooting down the stretch by Anacortes led to the final score.”

Hope Hurtado led all scorers with 18 points for the Seahawks.

Nizhoni Wheeler was the top scorer for the Riders with 7 and also had five rebounds and three steals.

Lauren Lunt and Hayley Baxley added six apiece.

“We forced quite a few turnovers and contested most shots,” Poindexter said.

“Again, our defense is keeping us competitive, but our offense has to progress for us to win games. While we are now 2-5 on the season, we are holding opponents to 40 points per game in our five losses.

“If we could make one more three-point shot, one inside shot, and two free throws each game, we could be 6-1 on the season. As our younger players gain more varsity experience, we expect more wins to come our way.”

Port Angeles (0-2, 2-5) visits Klahowya on Monday.

QUILCENE — Double-doubles by Sammy Rae and Katie Love and a solid game from Megan Weller pushed the Rangers to the SeaTac League victory.

Rae had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Quilcene, while Love added 14 and 10.

Weller scored 13, nabbed eight steals, with five rebounds and three assists.

“The girls were more efficient tonight on offense,” Rangers coach Briana Weller said.

“They are finally moving the ball quickly and efficiently and waiting for the open cutters and finding the gaps.”

Weller praised Rae, Weller, Allison Jones and Taylor Burnston for “a great job of seeing the floor [offensively].”

She also liked her team’s half-court defense and rebounding.

Quilcene (1-0, 5-2) visits Clallam Bay on Monday.

BREMERTON — A poor shooting night tripped up the Wolves on the road.

Sequim shot just 11 of 47 (23 percent) from the floor, including 2 of 16 from beyond the 3-point line in Friday’s loss.

“We are getting the shots that we want and the right people taking those shots,” Wolves coach Evan Still said.

“We just aren’t converting them.”

Victoria Cummins and Kylee Williams led Sequim with eight points apiece.

Cummins also had four blocks.

Elise Beuke scored five and hauled down 12 rebounds.

Adrienne Haggery had six points and six boards for the Wolves (1-2, 4-4).
