FEDERAL WAY — Port Angeles turnovers followed by transition baskets by the opposition hampered the Roughriders boys basketball team in two losses at the Decatur Holiday Tournament.
On Monday, Port Angeles hung with Class 4A Decatur for a half before succumbing in a 69-53 loss.
“Decatur has played some very good 4A schools and played them all tough,” Riders coach Kasey Ulin said.
“This was a great nonleague game that will help us as we get into league play. I am glad we are playing these bigger schools, these games make us work on the things we have to do to be a good team.”
Hunter Hathaway put up solid numbers for Port Angeles in each game.
Against Decatur, Hathaway recorded a double-double after scoring 24 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
“I can’t say enough about Hunter and how he battles,” Riders coach Kasey Ulin said.
“He single-handedly grabbed half of our rebounds.”

The turnover bug again impacted Port Angeles against the Cougars.
“Our Achilles heel right now is turning the ball over and giving up transition points,” Ulin said.
We are improving and the kids are playing hard, and as soon as we can limit giving up easy points we are going to be a tough team.”
Hathaway had another double-double, this time with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
“Sophomore Noah McGoff came in and played well,” Ulin said.
“Lakewood traps, and pressures the ball for 32 minutes [and] Noah really handled the pressure well.”
Bryant frith had 11 points for Port Angeles, which wrapped a stretch of six games in nine days.
“That is asking a lot from the guys but they handled it well,” Ulin said.
“If we continue to progress with how far we have came in five weeks we are going to be tough come mid- January.”
The Riders (1-1, 3-4) get some time off before hosting St. Michaels of Victoria, B.C. on Friday, Jan. 2.

DEMING — The Spartans picked up a tournament title on Tuesday, topping 12 other teams, including many from the Class 2A and 3A ranks.
Forks had five wrestlers win their weight classes and three grapplers place second.
“The kids wrestled well all day,” Spartans coach Bob Wheeler said.
“I was really happy with the effort and intensity. I don’t think we lost any matches because of lack of effort. We lost some very close matches because of poor technique or just not understanding what was happening. Those are things we can work on in practice.”
Winners for Forks were Tristen Williams at 113 pounds, Alvaro Ortiz (120), Javier Contreras (145), Jack Dahlgren (182) and Miguel Morales (220).
Ortiz topped teammate Alan Ensastegui in the 120 final.
“Whenever two of our wrestlers can make it to the finals it is a good day for them,” Wheeler said.
He also praised Contreras for dominating so far this season, Dahlgren for becoming a force to be reckoned with as a sophomore and Morales for his early-season exploits.
“Once again Miguel Morales showed that he belongs at the top of anyone’s list,” Wheeler said.
“Last week at La Center he beat the number one ranked 220 pounder in 2A and this week he beat last year’s state champion from the B state championships.”
On Saturday, Forks female wrestlers Brooke Peterson and Williams won their classes at a tournament at Sedro Woolley.
“To earn their championships Brooke beat a returning state champion from Oregon and Tristen beat a two-time Washington state placer,” Wheeler said.
