PREP SPORTS: Pol leads Quilcene football to big win; other area reports

QUILCENE — Colten Pol scored all seven touchdowns for Quilcene as the Rangers routed Mary M. Knight 52-14 in Class 1B football action.

Pol ran for 161 yards with four touchdowns and caught four passes for 182 yards and three more scores for a combined total of 343 yards.

He did all that in just over one half of action.

“He didn’t play almost the whole second half,” Quilcene coach Byron Wilson said following Saturday’s game.

“I pulled him out and made him take off his gear.”

Pol ran for touchdowns of 3, 4, 27 and 50 yards in the first quarter as the Rangers built a quick 30-0 lead. He then scored on passes from quarterback Eli Harrison of 15 and 72 yards in the second quarter and then an 82-yarder in the third.

Although it was the Colten Pol Show, Wilson made sure to credit the blocking. So did Pol.

“Well, we run a power offense and he’s the tailback,” Wilson said of Pol. “That’s who gets the ball all the time.

“And he had some good blocking up front.

“He was good about complimenting his linemen. He also has a great fullback [Triston Williams]. He has some people in front of him who are really good.

“[Offensive lineman] Nate Weller, he did a great job. Our center, Hayes Beathard . . . he had a big kid over him the entire game and he did a good job.”

Wilson was happy with how the Rangers responded after losing to Lopez 64-20 in the season opener.

“We got pounded the week before. Some teams never come back, we did,” Wilson said.

“We played well. You’re always pleased with a win. I told them that the games are probably going to get tougher down the road so we’re going to have to get better.”

Wilson liked the way Mary M. Knight played, despite the lopsided score.

“They’re a good little scrappy team,” Wilson said. “What I like about them, they never gave up. That’s a compliment to their coaching.”

Quilcene (1-1) plays its first night game of the season Friday on the road against Clallam Bay (2-0).

“It’s nice to give our kids the best competition that there is,” Roughriders coach Pat Durr said.

“Then, when we compete in league, district and state with 2A schools, our kids aren’t phased by tough competitive races since they’ve had practice in tough situations.”

The short race distance adds to the challenge.

“This is a wildly fast race since it is only 2 miles,” Roughriders coach Pat Durr said.

“Even at the high school level, it has become a sprint race. Athletes go out very fast, but it is only the strong that survive.”

The Port Angeles girls placed ninth in the tough competition, led by Long, who placed 18th in the varsity race with a time of 12 minutes, 49 seconds.

The team’s strength showed in the close times of the rest of the team pack, a 28-second spread.
