SEQUIM — The new, two-division Olympic League is finally official.
In an email this week, Sequim High School athletic director Dave Ditlefsen welcomed Chimacum and Coupeville to the league, saying the Olympic League’s athletic directors and principals had voted to accept them as well as the reconfigured league.
Starting in the 2014-15 school year, the Olympic League will have a seven-team 2A division and a four-team 1A division.
The 2A division will consist of Bremerton, Kingston, North Kitsap, North Mason, Olympic, Port Angeles and Sequim.
The 1A Division will be made up of Chimacum, Coupeville, Klahowya and Port Townsend.
Klahowya is currently a Class 2A member of the Olympic League, but has been reclassified to 1A.
Port Townsend is currently a member of the Olympic League in all sports but football, in which it competes against in the Nisqually League.
Chimacum is leaving the Nisqually League for the Olympic League.
Coupeville has been competing in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.
Ditlefsen also laid out the Olympic League’s scheduling plan:
■ Most sports (basketball, soccer, baseball and softball) will play within the division twice and crossover with the other division once.
■ Some sports (swimming, track, cross country and wrestling) will just play everybody once.
■ In football, the 2A teams will not be required to play the 1A teams.
■ Coupeville will only compete within the 1A division and will not crossover with any of the 2A schools.
“We are looking forward to working with our two new members and providing the 1A schools a solid avenue to advance their teams into the 1A playoffs,” Ditlefsen said.
