MOUNT VERNON — Neah Bay routed Shorewood Christian 72-59 to set up a rematch with Lummi in the Class 1B Tri-District boys basketball championship game.
Lummi (23-0), ranked No. 1 in the state, is the last team to defeat the fourth-ranked Red Devils (16-2), and one of two teams to do so this season (Sequim is the other).
Neah Bay cruised to Thursday’s win in the semifinals, jumping out to a 24-15 lead after one quarter and enjoying a 45-26 cushion at halftime at Mount Vernon School.
Abraham Venske and John Reamer led the Red Devils’ quick start with nine and six points, respectively, in the first quarter.
Venske finished with a team-high 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field, while Reamer scored 12 points.
Venske also had six steals and three assists.
Ryan Moss overcame early foul trouble to contribute 15 points to Neah Bay’s victory.
Jongi Claplanhoo had seven points and six assists. Kenrick Doherty Jr. finished with seven points and Jericho McGimpsey had six.
The Lions (12-10) were led by 23 points from Jovi Fevaleaki and 18 from Stan Domingo.
Neah Bay also beat Shorewood Christian at last year’s state tournament in the third-place game.

Neah Bay playing for third place
MOUNT VERNON — The Red Devils advanced to the third-place game by defeating Muckleshoot 64-45 in the Class 1B Tri-District tournament at Mount Vernon School.
Neah Bay’s win over the Kings on Friday followed a 59-50 loss to Crosspoint on Thursday in the Tri-District semifinals.
Against Muckleshoot, the Red Devils were led by three double-digit scorers: Gina McCaulley with 14 points and Faye Chartraw and Blaire Hill with 10 points apiece.
McCaulley scored 10 of her 14 points in the first quarter.
Kiawnna Doherty and Kaela Tyler each had seven points in the win, while Jessica Greene contributed four assists and four steals and Hailey Greene had six points, four assists and three steals.
The fourth-ranked Red Devils (17-1) held the Kings (9-9) to 16 first-half points while scoring 40 of their own.
Muckleshoot’s Myckenzie Courville led all scorers with 27 points.
In Thursday’s semifinal, Neah Bay and Crosspoint were tied 41-41 entering the fourth quarter.
The Warriors (21-3) pulled away by outscoring the Red Devils 18-9 in the final period to earn a spot in the championship game against Evergreen Lutheran.
Crosspoint was led by 19 points each from Desere’e Doty and Holly Bandara.
Doty is the daughter of former Sequim standout Derrin Doty.
Chartraw led the Red Devils with 16 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
McCaulley had 11 points and four rebounds and Tyler had 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.

UNIVERSITY PLACE — The Trojans’ fourth-quarter explosion brought the Wolves’ season to a close one game shy of qualifying for regionals.
The teams entered the fourth with Sequim leading 30-26. Olympic then surpassed its scoring output in the first three quarters combined with a 33-point outburst.
Sequim’s Alex Barry concluded his high school career with a 22-point, 13-rebound, 4-block effort.
Payton Glasser added seven points, and Vance Willis had four points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Wolves finish with an 16-8 record.
Jumier Johnson and Makaleb McInnis each put up 21 points for Olympic (17-7).

SUMNER — The Tarriers ended the Cowboys’ season on the strength of a dominant third quarter.
Chimacum held a 29-28 lead at halftime, but Charles Wright outscored the Cowboys 20-9 in the third to take a 48-38 lead into the fourth.
Brendon Naylor led Chimacum with 18 points. Orion Weller added 11 points and Matthew Koenig scored seven.
The Cowboys’ finish with a 7-14 and the Olympic League 1A Division championship.

Port Angeles’ Macias seeded first, second after preliminaries
FEDERAL WAY — Port Angeles’ John Macias heads into the second day of the state championships with the first and second seeds in two individual events.
Macias is first in the 100-yard freestyle and second in the 100 backstroke after Friday’s preliminaries.
He also advanced with Port Angeles’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, both of which are ranked second after the preliminaries. Joining Macias in those relays are Tristin Butler, Jay Liang and Wei-Yan Fu.
Like Macias, Butler advanced to the second day in both of his individual events, the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.
Other area swimmers who earned their way to the second day: Liang (200 individual medley) and Fu (100 butterfly) for Port Angeles, and Sequim’s Eric Prosser in the 100 backstroke.
Crescent’s Lucas DeFrang was the area’s top diver Friday, coming in seventh at the preliminaries. Port Angeles’ Scott Methner is ninth and Sequim’s Mathew Craig is 16th.

Port Angeles’ Wharton places 23rd at state meet
TACOMA — Port Angeles’ Maya Wharton and Sequim’s Julie Pineau each claimed top-30 finishes at the 2A/3A state championship meet at the Tacoma Dome on Friday.
Wharton finished in a three-way tie for 23rd in the floor exercise with a score of 9.225.
Pineau grabbed 29th in the vault with a score of 8.425.
Wharton also took 42nd in the vault, 56th on the bars and 56th on the beam.
Pineau was 63rd on the floor and 69th on the bars.
Enissa Albin, the only other Sequim state contestant, paced the North Olympic Peninsula with a 52nd-place showing in the beam.
The Roughriders qualified as a team, and therefore had six gymnasts in each meet.
Cassii Middlestead placed 47th on the bars and Sydney Miner took 52nd on the vault, 59th on the floor and on the beam and 85th on the bars.
Elizabeth DeFrang finished 60th in the vault, 64th on the bars, 73rd on the floor and 78th on the beam.
Karlie Gochnour claimed 67th on the vault and 78th on the bars.
Rozzi Piper was 69th on the beam and on the vault and 87th on the floor
Emily Basden placed 79th on the beam and 95th on the floor; Cassidy Tamburro took 85th in vault, 90th on bars, 85th on floor; and Alyssa Wetzler was 92nd on the beam.
