PORT ANGELES — Maddie Boe’s goal in the 78th minute gave Port Angeles a 2-1 win over rival Sequim at Civic Field.
“When I got the goal it was a huge relief,” Boe said.
With the win, the Roughriders improve to 2-4 on the season, while Sequim falls to 1-5.
“It’s what makes rivalry games so fun,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said of Thursday’s game.
“A tight game, playing in front of a large home crowd and a pressure-packed, early season must-win game for both sides.”
Port Angeles took the lead in the 25th minute when Brittany McBride was taken down in the penalty box to set up a penalty shot that McBride buried in the left side of the goal.
“I just thought back to practice — nice and simple to the side, and put it in the back of the net,” McBride said.
Sequim equalized just before halftime after a scramble for the ball ended up in the Riders’ goal.
The game seesawed back and forth in the second half, with neither team getting the breakthrough goal.
Although Port Angeles ended up out-shooting the Wolves 16-5, the second half’s most dangerous shot came from Sequim’s Maeve Harris — 25-yarder that was tipped over the bar by Rider goalkeeper Hayley Baxley.
With 10 minutes left, a flurry of shots by Port Angeles signaled a momentum shift — Madison St. George, Kylee Jeffers and McBride just missed close range attempts.
Finally, Boe, the Riders’ leading scorer, scored the game-winner with two minutes left in regulation.
Moseley was generally pleased with his team’s play.
“We did some things really well and we struggled in some areas,” Moseley said.
“Better quality passing and finishing are needed if we want to compete with the top teams in the league, but winning this game is huge for the girls, and moves us into fifth place in the Olympic League.”
Moseley named Boe and McBride as offensive players of the game.
Emma Moseley was named the Riders’ top transition player for her passing and control of the midfield, and Karina Bohman earned defensive player of the game honors with another quality game in the back.

Port Angeles 3, Sequim 2
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders beat the Wolves for the first time since 2011.
The two rivals battled for five sets before Port Angeles prevailed 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12.
The Riders improve to 2-3 on the season.
“There were two big differences between tonight and other matches we have played this year,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said of Thursday’s game.
“First, we played with a lot of energy and excitement at all times — the entire team, court and bench.
“Second, we reduced our unforced errors by five to six per set. Every game was very close and that was a big difference.
“I am very proud of the girls for playing their game and not letting the pressures get to them during the game.”
Holli Williams served 20 for 22 with three aces for the Riders, and had 33 assists, five kills, 26 digs and one block.
Kendra Harvey added two aces on 19/19 serving with 34 digs and one kill.
Brittany Norberg contributed 11 kills, seven digs, one block and served 12/13; Bailee Jones added nine kills, two blocks and served 6/6; andMaddy Hinrichs had 22 digs and six kills to go along with 14/14 serving.
Sarah Steinman also had perfect serving for Port Angeles, going 12/12, and Alyssa Wetzler contributed 17 digs.
For Sequim, Emma LeBlanc was 16/16 serving with three aces and 12 digs, and Hannah Hudson had 36 digs and 18 perfect passes.
Alyse Armstrong added 13 assists and 13 kills, Alexas Besand had 12 kills and 16 digs, and Emily Wallner six kills, 12 digs, and served 13/14 with one ace.
Caitlin Stofferahn finished with seven kills, and Vanessa Martinez contributed 12 digs.
Olympic League play begins Tuesday when Port Angeles hosts Olympic (2-4), and Sequim (3-3) travels to Kingston (2-2).
Port Angels won the JV match over Sequim in three sets 25-16, 25-16, 17-25.
Sequim took the C-team matchup.
Crescent 3, Port Townsend 0
PORT TOWNSEND — The Loggers earned a three-set victory over the Redskins 25-19, 28-26, 15-19.
Crescent coach Alex Baker appreciated how his team bounced back after losing to Klahowya earlier in the week.
“We really kept the pressure on them from the start of the match to the finish of the match,” Baker said of Thursday’s win.
“We’re playing outstanding volleyball at this point. It was great to see us move ahead, and see a young team come into its own.
Devanie Christie led the Loggers with 17 for 19 serving with six aces, 14 assists and one kill.
Shannon Williams served 8/8 with an ace, four blocks, three tips for points and four kills.
Baker also lauded libero Teya Williams for her “outstanding defensive performance.”
Crescent (3-2) plays at Quilcene (4-0) on Tuesday in class 1B action, while the Redskins (1-4) open Olympic League play on the road against Bremerton (0-6).
Girls Swimming and Diving
Port Angeles 139, Olympic 39
BREMERTON — The Roughriders placed first and outscored the Trojans in all 12 events to improve to 3-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Olympic League.
Port Angeles added three new individual district-qualifying times from Jayden Sparhawk (100 butterfly), Audra Perrizo (100 freestyle) and Delanie Critchfield in the 500 freestyle, in which she placed first at Thursday’s meet.
Sparhawk and Critchfield achieved individual district times for the first time in their swimming careers.
Carter Juskevich, Ashlee Reid and Janie Macias were all double-event winners against Olympic.
Juskevich won the 200 free with a time of two minutes and 8.61 seconds and 100 breaststroke (1:20.20); Reid placed first in the 50 free (26.47 seconds) and 100 free (58.51 seconds); and Macias took the 100 fly (1:06.71) and 100 backstroke (1:07.27).
Perrizo placed first in the 200 individual medley for the Riders with a time of 2:36.81, and Haili Farnam won the 1-meter diving competition with 126.7 points.
Port Angeles returns to action Thursday on the road against North Kitsap.
