PREP SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS: Chimacum volleyball starts slow, loses to Wright

CHIMACUM — A slow start doomed the Chimacum volleyball team in its final home match of the season Wednesday night.

The Cowboys dropped their first game by 13 points but rebounded with a strong showing the rest of the match before falling 25-8, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15 to Charles Wright.

Head coach Sally Dankert said that despite the rough start, she was pleased with how her girls responded in the Class 1A Nisqually League match.

“We had to talk about our attitude [Tuesday] and how that was really holding us back, and it was different today,” Dankert said. “They didn’t give up.”

Alyssa and Aubrey Gale each had solid performances in their final home match for the Cowboys.

While Alyssa had seven kills and three digs in the loss, Aubrey came through with a match-high six blocks and four kills.

Teammate Lauren Thacker had six kills, nine digs and 100 percent serving with two aces, and Megan Dukek added seven assists, 10 digs and 21-for-22 serving with three aces.

Dukek’s serving led to a big run in the third game, one the Cowboys took 25-20.

“It felt better even though we lost since at least we tried,” Dankert said. “It was an improvement, just in a different area.”

Olivia Baird dished out six assists for the Cowboys and had three kills, 100 percent serving and five digs.

Mallory Cossell, playing libero for first time, added 11 digs and 12-for-13 serving.

The Cowboys (1-10 in league, 3-11 overall) close out their season with a game at Cascade Christian on Monday.
