FORKS — The Forks wrestling team had a dominating performance, beating 1A Evergreen foe Rochester 63-3.
“I was very pleased with the team’s performance,” Spartans coach Bob Wheeler said.
“This is the first time this year that I can say everyone who wrestled, wrestled well, and that also includes the girls and junior varsity.
“I knew that we should win, but I really didn’t expect the score to be what it was.
“We had some kids who not only beat good opponents, but also beat them soundly.”
In the 132-pound match, Forks’ Nanito Sanchez defeated last year’s sixth-place state finisher Bobby Brien 9-3.
Alvaro Ortiz won the 120-pound match by technical fall, 20-4, while Nate Gimlin (170 pounds) won with a second-round pin and 195-pounder Gavin Castaneda won with a first-round pin.
Javier Contreras (145 pounds) and Abisai Garcia (152 pounds) won by decision.
Forks’ only loss came by decision, as Luke Loveless fell to Matt Shields.
Girls Basketball
Neah Bay 59, Crescent 10
JOYCE — Cierra Moss scored 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had four steals to lead the fourth-ranked Red Devils to a North Olympic League win over the Loggers.
Vonte Aguirre added 10 points for Neah Bay, Starlena Halttunen had seven points and three steals and Faye Chartraw contributed six points and eight rebounds.
Shannon Williams led Crescent with five points, Alyssa Hutto had three and Bailey Casad scored two.
Neah Bay (1-0 in league, 8-1 overall) hosts Clallam Bay tonight, while Crescent is off until Monday when it travels to face Oakville.
Forks 59, Clallam Bay 39
CLALLAM BAY — The Spartans built a cushion by outscoring the Bruins 20-8 in the second quarter and held on from there to earn the nonleague win.
Courtnie Paul led Forks with 18 points, Erin Weekes added eight, Alexis Leons finished with seven and Sabrina Collins had six points.
Freshman Mariah LaChester paced Clallam Bay with 14 points. Zeria Signor contributed 11 points and Kyla Wilson scored eight.
The Spartans play at Elma tonight, while the Bruins return to North Olympic League action on the road against Neah Bay.
Boys Basketball
Olympic 81, Port Angeles 59
BREMERTON — The Trojans avenged their early season loss to the Roughriders to remain in second place in the Olympic League set up an important matchup at second-place Sequim tonight.
Sophomore Lambros Rogers set a career-high in scoring for the second time this week, leading Port Angeles with 14 points.
Derek Schumacher added 12 points, while Brady Konopaski and Hayden Gunderson scored nine points each.
Kyle Setten led Olympic with 16 points, Jumier Johnson had 14 and Makaleb McInnis scored 13.
Port Angeles (5-4 in league, 7-6 overall), now tied for fourth place with North Kitsap, plays at North Mason (1-7, 4-8) tonight.
Neah Bay 69, Crescent 32
JOYCE — The top-ranked Red Devils opened North Olympic League play with a road win over the young Loggers.
Ryan Moss topped Neah Bay with 16 points, including 4 for 9 from 3-point range.
Kenrick Doherty Jr. added 13 points and made 3 of 6 treys.
Both Moss and Doherty had three assists each, and Doherty grabbed four offensive rebounds.
Josiah Greene contributed 10 points to the win, and Zeke Greene scored five points and dished seven assists.
McCabe Story led the Loggers with 11 points and Kaleb Dodson added 10.
Neah Bay (7-1 overall) hosts league foe Clallam Bay tonight.
Crescent returns to action Monday with a road game against Oakville.
