FORKS — Forks racked up 26 service aces as a team as the Spartans hooked the Ilwaco Fishermen 25-18, 25-17, 25-13 in a Pacific League volleyball sweep Thursday.
“It was awesome for them to get the win in three,” coach Jenn LeDuke said. “We started off strong and then relaxed but did finish in three. Kaidence Rigby led us with kills, she is hitting very well this year.
“Elizabeth Soto played well with a lot of big digs and saves to keep plays alive. Erika Williams is leading us with her setting and solid net play. As a team they had 26 aces, I can’t wait for them to play with confidence together as a team.”
Forks (6-1, 8-3) will host Raymond (8-0, 9-3) with a shot at moving into a tie for first place on Tuesday.
Sequim 3, Olympic 2
SEQUIM — The Wolves overcame a mid-match dip, rallying to beat the Trojans in five games at home Thursday.
“The fifth game we went out and took care of business,” coach Jennie Webber Heilman. “The last few games we’ve been to the deciding game, we’ve been on the wrong side of it, so it was good to see the girls respond and finish it out.”
Webber Heilman said Brianna Palenik put together a four-point serving run in game five, while Sydney Clark, Jolene Vaara and Kassi Montero each served three-point runs in the final set.
Vaara continued her great stretch of play, leading Sequim with 17 kills, seven stuff blocks and 16 digs. She also served 17 of 19 with seven aces.
“The aces and stuff blocks are probably career highs,” Webber Heilman said.
Sydney Clark served 18 for 18 with three aces, 26 assists and a kill.
Freshman Rose Gibson served well, going 22 for 23 at the line with six aces and two kills.
Montero served 16 for 19 with four aces, five digs, three kills and two perfect passes.
Palenik went 17 for 19 with five aces, six kills and six digs.
Sydney Hegtvedt also served 7 of 7 with two aces and a pair of digs.
Sequim (8-2, 8-3) visits first-place North Kitsap (9-0, 9-2) on Tuesday.
Crescent 3, Clallam Bay 0
JOYCE — The Loggers picked up a 25-16, 25-8, 25-17 home sweep of the Bruins on Thursday.
“Chloe Ferro-May and Naomii Sprague did a tremendous job passing to our setter Hayden Horn who had 16 assists,” coach Kimber Sprague said. “Eight of those assists went to Katelyn Dunavant who did a fabulous job on the net tonight for us.
Crescent (2-0, 7-2) visits Neah Bay on Tuesday.
Clallam Bay (0-2, 2-9) hosts Chief Kitsap on Tuesday.
Girls Soccer Sequim 1, Olympic 0
SEQUIM — Sequim broke through late when Jenny Gomez headed in a corner kick sent in by Raimey Brewer with less than 30 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Wolves past the cellar-dwelling Trojans on Thursday.
Olympic was so concerned with Sequim’s scoring attack, the Trojans chose to sit all the way back defensively.
“It was an interesting match, what they did well we hadn’t seen before,” coach Ken Garling said. “They played what they consider a low block, with a single striker up top and a sweeper 5-10 yards behind the defensive back four. They were going to try anything to stop us from scoring. It certainly frustrated us to figure out how to crack that.
Garling said the Wolves attacked the formation by using the width of the field to spread Olympic out and then send balls in toward the middle,.
“But Olympic was content to clear any ball out, send the ball forward and get it out of the way,” Garling said.
“We had chances to score, we ended up with 32 shots on goal, but we were a little off all game with the Trojans willing to bunker it out.”
Brewer’s corner kicks have set up a number of Sequim goals this season.
“We’ve been doing really well on those all season and Jenny Gomez was right there to head it in at the finish,” Garling said.
“I’m proud of the girls’ fight and tenacity, seeing something different helps us learn, how to oversome obstacles and credit to Olympic, their strategy really worked for them.”
It was the fourth straight shutout and sixth straight win for the Wolves (9-1-0), who will visit league-leading North Kitsap (11-0-0, 11-1-0) on Tuesday.
Port Angeles 9, North Mason 1
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders started strong scoring five goals in the first 18 minutes against the Bulldogs.
“Going into the game we wanted to work on several different things, stuff that will help us long term or in the postseason, rather than just scoring a bunch of goals,” coach Daniel Horton said.
“But then we went out and scored three goals in the first seven minutes and you don’t want to put a defensive press on because it would look like we were running up the score.”
Teanna Clark and Izzy Felton each achieved hat tricks for Port Angeles.
Clark added three assists, while Felton had one.
“She did a little bit of everything for us,” Horton said of Clark.
Paige Mason scored two goals and added an assist for the Riders, while Kedryn Descala notched a goal and two assists.
“It was nice to see the scoring, our offense normally takes time to get going, nice to see it going eary and get a lot of people involved,” Horton said.
Port Angeles (6-5-0) visits Olympic on Tuesday.
