KELSO — Five area wrestlers placed at the Kelso Girls Invitational that featured more than 375 wrestlers competing from 56 schools.
Sequim’s Kaylee Ditlefsen and Forks’ Brooke Peterson were the North Olympic Peninsula’s highest finishers at the meet, both taking second place in their respective weight classes at the two-day meet.
Ditlefsen placed second in the 140-pound class, and Peterson was the runner-up in the 145-pound division.
The only losses by the pair came in their respective finals matches.
Forks’ Tristen Williams placed fourth at 110 pounds.
Port Townsend’s Charity Jesionowski finished fourth in the 125-pound bracket by defeating Sequim’s Alma Mendoza with a 10-2 decision Saturday. Mendoza placed sixth.
Jesionowski had to battler her way to fourth with six wins.
“She lost her second match and with one more loss she would be out, but she turned that into a motivation and won five straight,” Port Townsend coach Steve Grimm said.
“I don’t think I could have been more proud of her and Ally [Bradley], Chloe [Rogers] and Hanna [Welch].”
Rogers (145 pounds) and Welch (140 pounds) were one win away from placing — only the top six placed — but still finished in the top eight.
“If they perfect a few moves . . . they will be right there with Charity in the top four,” Grimm said.
“The girls made a name for themselves as contenders, knocking off multiple top-10 Washington state-ranked girls.
“And now that they know what they can do, we need to spend the next three weeks training for districts and hopefully a run at the state tournament.”
As a team, Sequim placed 12th. Forks was 20th and Port Townsend was 22nd.
Forks boys at Gut Check Invite
OLYMPIA — The Spartans placed 11th out of 64 schools from all Washington classifications, Oregon and Canada at the Gut Check Invitational at Evergreen State College.
Forks had two second-place finishers and one fourth-place showing at the two-day meet.
At 120 pounds, senior Sebastian Morales placed second, losing to two-time state champion Trent Skelton from Liberty Bell.
Senior Miguel Morales was second at 285 pounds for the Spartans, losing to Tate Orndorff, a nationally ranked wreslter from Class 4A University High School.
Forks’ other placer was sophomore Jack Dahlgren, who came in fourth at 182 pounds.
Next up for the Spartans is senior night Thursday against Montesano.
Sequim boys at Bainbridge Invite
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — The Wolves had four individual placers and finished eighth out of 12 teams at the Bainbridge Island Invitational.
Sequim’s Michael Latimer won the 220-pound weight class, Jamie Schroepfer and Ben Newell placed third at 106 and 113 pounds, respectively, and Kevyn Ward finished fourth at 152 pounds.
The Wolves next compete at a double dual with Port Townsend and Port Angeles at Port Townsend.
Gymnastics
Riders, Wolves at WOWI Invitational
LACEY — The Port Angeles and Sequim gymnastics teams, which train together at Klahhane Gymnastics in Port Angeles, competed at the WOWI Invitational at Black Hills Gymnastics.
Each event at the meet was divided into three to four competitive divisions that allowed the gymnasts to be scored against athletes who are at the same skill level. There are no all-around scores and no team scores.
Port Angeles senior Alyssa Wetzler had the highest finish out of the area’s two teams, placing second on the uneven bars in the Gaby Division. Wetzler also took 10th on the balance beam in the Kyla Division.
Rozzi Piper, a senior, took sixth for the Roughriders in the Kyla Division balance beam, while teammate and fellow senior Emily Basden took ninth.
In the Kyla Division uneven bars, Sequim junior Julie Pineau placed third and Port Angeles freshman Cassidy Tamburro was 10th.
Pineau also placed sixth in the Kyla Division vault, two spots behind Riders freshman Sydney Miner.
Along with Wetzler, the Riders had two other placers in the Gaby Division bars: senior Elyse Lovgren took sixth and sophomore Sierra Jewell was ninth.
Port Angeles’ and Sequim’s next meet will be their only home meet of the season at Klahanne Gymnastics on Monday at 10:30 a.m.

NEAH BAY — The Red Devils jumped out on their North Olympic League foes early and never looked back.
Faye Chartraw led No. 4 Neah Bay on Friday with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Gina McCaulley and Kiawanna Doherty added 13 each for the Red Devils. McCaulley made 3 of 4 3-point shots and had a team-high four assists.
Blaire Hill also had eight rebounds for Neah Bay to go along with six points and two blocks.

NEAH BAY — Abraham Venske made all 10 field goals he attempted to lead the top-ranked Red Devils with 22 points.
Kenrick Doherty Jr. added 19 points and four assists, Jericho McGimpsey 17 points and seven rebounds and Damon Conwell added 13 points for Neah Bay.
Exchanged student Ole Nedderhoff led the Red Devils with five blocks, Xavier Johnson had a team-high six steals, while John Reamer topped Neah Bay with five assists to go along with four steals.
