FORKS — The Forks High School basketball teams inducted former Forks standout Ron Bagby into the Spartan Basketball Hall of Fame during Friday’s doubleheader against Tenino.
Bagby was a first-team All-State running back, leading the Spartans to the state semifinals in 1977 and won the 100-meter state championship that spring for the Forks track team.
He also set a Far West League record with 52 points for the Spartans, including making the steal and sinking the game-winning layup in a 79-77 win over Tenino.
Bagby attended the University of Puget Sound where he starred as a kick returner, defensive back and running back.
Bagby now lives and teaches in Coupeville. He was the Coupeville football coach for 26 years, head track coach for seven years, head basketball coach for four years and also a basketball assistant.
Besides coaching varsity football for 26 years, Bagby was head track coach for seven years, head basketball coach for four and assistant basketball coach for two.
He told the Whidbey News-Times upon his coaching retirement that his football teams won 120 games and dropped about the same “give or take a few.”
Bagby’s team qualified for the playoffs many times, and the Wolves’ most successful season was 1990 when Coupeville won the league title and advanced to the state quarterfinals.
His 1987 basketball team earned a spot in the state tournament.
Bagby and his wife Marie are the parents of four children.
