PORT TOWNSEND — Led by long-distance runners and sprint relay winners, the East Jefferson girls dominated the first Nisqually League meet of the season, the Rivals lone home meet Thursday at Blue Heron Middle School.
East Jefferson earned 70 team points, well ahead of Cascade Christian (39), Life Christian (30) and Klahowya (28).
Junior Aliyah Yearian posted two personal records in winning the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 21.28 seconds and the 400 in 1:04.43.
Yearian, Audrey Mathes, Kay Botkin and Camryn Hines (1:57.66) teamed up to edge Klahowya in the 4×200 relay by less than a second.
Addy Asbell, Sienna Emerson, Mathes and Botkin also won the 4×100 in 1:01.55.
Asbell also claimed the shot put with a throw of 32-07.5 feet. Hines also ran to a win in the 800 by 18 seconds over the next closest competitor (2:35.7).
Other event winners were junior Adelynn Johnson in the discus (79-03) and Fiona Fraser set a personal best time in winning the 3,200 for the Rivals (11:41.02).
East Jefferson’s long-distance runners also fared well in the boys competition, sparking the Rivals to a second-place finish with 57 points, behind Cascade Christian at 73.
Sophomore Soare Johnston won the 3,200 by more than a minute in 10:16.93 and senior Sebastian Manza won the 1,600 by 15 seconds (4:50.61).
Freshman Manaseh Lanphear Ramirez also was impressive, winning the long jump with a distance of 16-03.5 and finishing second in the 100 in 12.53 seconds.
Reid Martin claimed the javelin with a personal-best distance of 150-04, 42 feet ahead of the runner-up.
Indigo Gould also added a triple jump victory with a leap of 31-05.5.
The Rivals are at Vashon on March 28.
Baseball Port Angeles 10, Bremerton 6, 8 innings
BREMERTON — Ezra Townsend’s two-run home run lifted the Riders to an extra-innings win over the Knights, two days after a 10-0 shutout of Bremerton.
“It was a little more interesting this time out,” coach Zac Moore said. “We did well, we gave up too many walks [12], but we out hit them. We were up going into the seventh and we kind of took a break there and walked a lot of guys and they caught up with three runs,” coach Zac Moore said.
“In our turn at-bat in the eighth, Elijah Flodstrom got on base right away, Ezra got a two-run shot and we scored four runs.
Luke Flodstrom, who had caught most of the game, he came in to pitch and we had some really timely defense behind him that got us a double play and the W.”
Alex Angevine also went 3 for 5 for the Riders, and was intentionally walked in the extra frame.
“He had a monster game,” Moore said.
Port Angeles (2-0) hosts Shelton today.
Bainbridge 10, Sequim 0
BAINBRIDGE — The Wolves were no-hit by the Spartans on the road Thursday.
Toppy Robideau was a bright spot, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings on the mound.
Sequim (0-2) hosts Crosspoint today at 3 p.m.
Boys Golf Sequim 178, Bremerton 190
SEQUIM — Cole Smithson carded a 39 to share match medalist honors with Bremerton’s Jackson Fletcher in the Wolves’ win at The Cedars at Dungeness.
“I am so proud of Cole. He worked his tail off yesterday at practice, he committed to trying his best despite the outcome, and boy did it pay off,” coach Sean O’Mera said.
Zack Thompson added a 43, that included a two-stroke penalty and some education on how to avoid that penalty in the future, while Carter Cronin added a 47.
Cody Dunscomb and Kyle Sharpe each totaled rounds of 49 to round out Sequim’s scorers.
Sequim hosts Kingston on Tuesday.
Port Angeles 172, North Mason 263
PORT ANGELES — Phoenix Flores shot a nine-hole round of 40 to earn match medalist honors in a win over the Bulldogs on Thursday at Peninsula Golf Club.
Austin Worthington was right behind Flores, 1-stroke back at 42, while Edun Bailey and Cale Wentz each posted rounds of 45 for Port Angeles (2-0).
“These gents are a pleasure to work with,” coach Bob Anderson said.
“They know how to work, they enjoy the process and just continue to keep working. I believe the future is bright for these young athletes.”
