PREP SPORTS: East Jefferson cross country opens season

MAPLE VALLEY — The East Jefferson Cross Country team had its opening meet of the season at the Tahoma Coed Relays at Lake Wilderness Park in Maple Valley on Saturday.

The event consisted of mixed-gender relay teams of individuals (3 of one gender, 2 of the other) in which each athlete ran the 3000-meter loop before handing off to the next runner.

East Jefferson ran three teams in the event with their team of junior Sebastian Manza, senior Max Allworth-Miles, junior Camryn Hines, sophomore Aliyah Yearian, and freshman Soare Johnston finishing 11th overall. There were 36 schools competing in the event, many with multiple teams entered.

East Jefferson had a total of six runners in the top 20 among the boys and girls.

Allworth-Miles had the best boys’ time at 11:36, good for fifth. Manza posted a time of 11:49, good for 11th and Johnston was 18th with a time of 12:43.

Among the girls, Yearian finished fifth with a time of 13:43, while Hines was 10th with a time of 14:10 and Lia Poore was 14th with a time of 15:16.

Indigo Gould also posted a time of 15:13, Aiden Nichols finished in 16:08 and Alexander Robison finished in 17:32. For the girls, Ava Vaughan-Mifsud had a time of 16:15.

The East Jefferson team will travel to Port Angeles on Saturday to compete at the Salt Creek Invitational.
